Kellso is from Detroit and started performing professionally at the age of 11. He first played in symphony orchestras before turning to traditional jazz. In 1981 he had the opportunity to perform with Wild Bill Davison . After graduating from Wayne State University , he played with New McKinney's Cotton Pickers and the JC Heard Orchestra. He moved to New York in 1989 and has since worked in the swing and mainstream jazz scene with musicians such as Ruby Braff ( Beeing with You , 1996), John Bunch , Howard Alden , Dan Barrett , Vince Giordano , Marty Grosz ( Ring Dem Bells , 1995 ), Dick Hyman , Kenny Davern , Milt Hinton , Scott Robinson , Frank Vignola , Matt Munisteri , Bob Wilber and The World's Greatest Jazz Band . In 1999 he worked on Randy Sandke's project The Re-Discovered Louis and Bix . Since 1993 he has released several albums on the Arbors Records label , beginning with Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 - The Plot Thickens . In 2007 the album Blue Roof Blues: A Love Letter to New Orleans, dedicated to New Orleans and Dixieland Jazz , was created . In 2019 he released the album Jazz Crush in the octet led together with Evan Arntzen . He was also heard on Catherine Russell's Grammy- nominated album Alone Together (2019).

In the opinion of the critic Owen Cordle, Kellso is by far the most interesting new cornet player since Warren Vaché; In his fluid and always harmonious playing he discovers influences from Roy Eldridge , Rex Stewart , Howard McGhee , Louis Armstrong and Bobby Hackett . For Scott Yanow he is an "excellent hot trumpeter" who has acquired a mastery on the puje, a cross between the cornet and the trumpet. For Richard Cook , Kellso plays the cornet in the tradition of Ruby Braff.
