Jazzland
The Jazzland is a jazz club in the first Viennese district of Inner City .
history
Jazzland was founded in 1972 in a cellar under the Ruprechtskirche . At that time, live music of this genre was mainly played by local musicians, guest appearances by international jazz musicians were rather the exception.
In addition to local musicians, around 400 US stars performed in the basement of the Landl . These included the blues musicians Roosevelt Sykes , Memphis Slim , Big Joe Williams and Little Brother Montgomery , the classic jazz musicians Wild Bill Davison , Bud Freeman , Max Kaminsky and Jimmy McPartland , swingers like Teddy Wilson , Clark Terry , Harry "Sweets" Edison , Dorothy Donegan and Benny Carter , the modern-jazz art farmer , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Ray Brown and Herb Ellis and avant-garde musicians like Dave Liebman , Lee Konitz , Paul Motian and Bob Brookmeyer .
Jazzland is still run by its founders Tilly and Axel Melhardt. It is considered to be the oldest jazz club that exists in Vienna today.
The 40th anniversary was celebrated in spring 2012 with guest performances by Greetje Kauffeld , Scott Robinson , Dana Gillespie , Dusko Goykovich , Mundell Lowe , Thomas Gansch , Jim Galloway , Curtis Fuller , Bill Ramsey and the Fritz Pauer - Karl Ratzer Band.
In the spring of 2017, a small "45 Years JAZZLAND Festival" took place in which, in addition to the Viennese founding band Red Hot Pods, international jazz musicians such as Carole Alston , Dana Gillespie , Harold Mabern , Rossano Sportiello , Don Menza , Heinz von Hermann , Howard Alden , Seamus Blake , the Mojo Blues Band , Diknu Schneeberger & Gismo Graf and Bill Ramsey performed.
