Heinz von Hermann (born October 21, 1936 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet and flute , composition, arrangements).

Hermann learned the classical violin as a child and came to jazz at the age of 17. He took clarinet lessons from Fatty George and is self-taught on all other instruments . In 1958 he was honored as the best young musician in a competition organized by Friedrich Gulda . He then gave up studying radio technology and in the same year went to Germany with Uzzi Förster's band , where he performed primarily in soldiers' clubs. In 1960 he founded his own band with the pianist Werner Giertz and Hartwig Bartz . Between 1961 and 1966 he had engagements with Herman Wilson, in an American club in Tripoli (with Peter Herbolzheimer ) and then found work in the Netherlands (with Gerry Hayes ), France and in the jazz club of Madrid , where he worked with Tete Montoliu , Booker Ervin , Lee Konitz , Billy Brooks and Donald Byrd belonged to the house band. In 1967 he played in Italy, from 1968 in Munich, where he played with Max Greger , in the jazz ensemble of Bayerischer Rundfunk, in his own quartet with Joe Harris , Jimmy Woode and Mike Thatcher and with Dusko Goykovich in the "Munich Big Band" and in a quintet .

From 1971 he was a member of the SFB Big Band led by Paul Kuhn . From the 1970s he often appeared in Herbolzheimer's “Rhythm Combination and Brass”.
