SFB Big Band

The SFB Big Band was a German big band of the Sender Free Berlin (SFB), which was directed by Paul Kuhn and existed from 1968 to 1980.

In 1968 Kuhn took over the direction of the dance orchestra of the Sender Freies Berlin, which was under the direction of William Greihs from 1954 to 1960, from 1960 to 1962 under the direction of Roland Kovac and then Jerry van Rooyen . In Berlin after the war there was also a forerunner in the Radio Berlin Tanzorchester , which was dissolved in 1950. Kuhn hired international soloists for the big band and was successful beyond the borders of Germany. Paul Kuhn and the SFB Big Band played a large part of the musical entertainment program on SFB radio and television; In addition, the big band appeared in countless SFB guest performances at home and abroad. Renowned jazz musicians such as Benny Bailey , Kurt Bong , Bobby Burgess , Eugen Cicero , Roman Dyląg , Rolf Ericson , Remy Filipovitch , Herb Geller , Slide Hampton , Joe Harris , Heinz von Hermann , Carmell Jones , Torolf Mølgaard , Walter Norris played in the band , André Paquinet , Milo Pavlović , Åke Persson , Al Porcino , Hans Rettenbacher , Rolf Römer , Ron Simmonds , Ronnie Stephenson and Leo Wright . The big band was involved with Kuhn in numerous productions with international musicians such as Ray Brown , Ray Charles or Quincy Jones and also released a number of albums, such as Tanz mit Paul Kuhn or Paul's Pianoparty . In 1976, actor Jerry Lewis appeared in a stage show with the SFB Big Band at the Montreux Casino. In December 1980 the SFB dissolved the big band for financial reasons.
