Rolf Ericson

Rolf Ericson , actually Rolf Ericsson, called Roffe, (born August 29, 1922 in Stockholm ; † June 16, 1997 ibid) was a Swedish jazz trumpeter who played a lot in the United States , both swing in big bands, as well as bop and West Coast Jazz .

He learned the trumpet at the age of 8, switched to jazz after listening to Louis Armstrong in Stockholm in 1933 and began his career in 1945 in dance bands and big bands. a. American guest soloists accompanied (as well as the Swedish singer Alice Babs ). In 1947 he went to New York , where he became a member of Charlie Barnet's big band in 1949 and of Woody Herman from 1950 . He also played with the Lighthouse All Stars of Howard Rumsey and took under his own name ( Rolf Ericson and his All American Stars , EmArcy 1956 with Cecil Payne , Duke Jordan ). After a short stay in Sweden in the summer of 1956, where he played and recorded with his own quintet, Ernestine Anderson and Lars Gullin , he went back to the States, where he a. a. Played with Woody Herman, Harold Land , Dexter Gordon , Stan Kenton , Maynard Ferguson (1960/1), Buddy Rich , Paul Gonsalves , Johnny Griffin , Benny Goodman , Gerry Mulligan and Charles Mingus (on The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady ). From 1963 to 1971 he was also a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra on several occasions (1963-1964 and 1969, 1973 also on tour in Sweden with Alice Babs). Ericson was also a popular studio musician in the US. From 1971 he was in Germany and played with radio big bands such as the SFB Big Band and as a studio musician. For Stockholm Sweetnin 1985 (Dragon) he received the Gyllene Skivan of the Orkesterjournal. In 2000 he received the Django d'Or (Sweden) as a legend of jazz .
