Arne Domnérus

Sven Arne Domnérus called Dompan (* 20 December 1924 in Södermalm in Solna -Bezirk, Stockholm , † 2. September 2008 in Stockholm) was a Swedish jazz - saxophonist and clarinetist and composer of Swing . He was considered one of the most important Swedish musicians of post-war jazz.

Live and act

In 1942 Domnérus led a band in Sundsvall and then played in Stockholm with the bands of Lulle Ellbojs (1943 to 1945 in the Winter Palace , first recordings in 1945) and Simon Brehm (1947 to 1949). He represented Swedish jazz at the Festival International 1949 de Jazz , was then a member of Thore Erling's band (1949) before joining the septet of trumpeter Rolf Ericsson in 1951 , who at that time founded a house band at the Nalen jazz club, which also includes Lars Gullin played. Domnérus took over the leadership of the band from Ericsson in 1952, which he led until 1964 (Nalenbandet). From 1956 to 1978 he was in the big band of the Swedish radio, where he a. a. from 1964 had a series of jazz under the stars . He has also been writing music for film and later for television since the 1940s. He made many recordings with the pianist Bengt Hallberg , as well as with Monica Zetterlund , with Putte Wickman and with Bengt-Arne Wallin . He has also recorded with James Moody , Art Farmer , Clifford Brown, and with many of his own groups (including guitarist Rune Gustafsson ). He also plays a lot with church musicians, choirs and chamber music orchestras.

In 1967 he was with his sextet at the Jazz Festival in Tallinn .

Prizes and awards

In 1999 Domnérus received the Django d'Or (Sweden) as a Master of Jazz and in 2000 the Eurodjango . Several of his albums received the Gyllene Skivan Prize from Orkesterjournalen: Rockin Chair 1955, Mobil 1967, Duets for Duke 1978 with Hallberg and Face to Face 1999 with Bernt Rosengren . In 2004 he was made an honorary professor. Posthumously he was named Legend of Jazz by Django d'Or in 2009.

The Swedish Guldsaxen Jazz Prize, endowed with 75,000 crowns, was the result of his initiative (the first prize winner was Magnus Lindgren in 2004).
