Bengt Hallberg
Bengt Hallberg (born September 13, 1932 in Gothenburg , † July 2, 2013 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish jazz pianist and composer .
Life
Hallberg first played classical piano, but wrote his first jazz arrangement at the age of 13. First he played in the combo of Kenneth Fagerlund . In 1948 he made his first recordings with Thore Jederby's big band and in 1950 with his own trio. In 1949 he recorded with the saxophonist Arne Domnérus , in whose trio he also played. In the 1950s he accompanied many foreign jazz musicians on tours in Sweden such as Stan Getz (recordings in 1951 in the groups of Fagerlund or with Lars Gullin , Jack Noren , on The Sound som the Swedish All Stars 2002, including the first recording of Dear Old Stockholm ) and Clifford Brown (1953, on Complete Metronome and Vogue Master Tapes 2002, with Art Farmer , arrangements Quincy Jones ). Between 1956 and 1963 he was active in the big band of the Swedish radio. He also studied at the Stockholm Music Academy from 1954 to 1957 . He recorded under his own name (e.g. Bengt Hallberg at the Golden Circle 1962), with the singer Lill-Babs and with Karin Krog ( Two of a kind 1982). He also worked with Gil Evans and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band .
In addition, between 1956 and 1988 he wrote the film music as a composer for over 25 cinema and television films in Sweden, a. a. for Madita (Madicken) films based on Astrid Lindgren and a Swedish Pooh Bear adaptation, as well as choir arrangements (e.g. for the Ad Libitum choir , 1994). He also played the accordion and has released records on this instrument. In 1988 he recorded with his Trio con Tromba with Jan Allan and Georg Riedel and in 2004, as before, with Domnerus in a trio ( Improviserat ! , Phontastic). In August 2012 he performed with Jan Lundgren at the Ystad Jazz Festival.
For Duets for Duke (Sonet 1978) with Arne Domnerus he received the Gyllene Skivan of the Orkesterjournals in 1978 , as he did in 1957 for his album Dinah . In 2001 he was awarded the Swedish Django d'Or as Master of Jazz , and in 2010 the Lars Gullin Prize . In 1977 he received the Swedish Literus et Artibus Prize.
Bengt Hallberg has been considered one of the most important jazz pianists of international standing since the 1950s, who processed the influences of Teddy Wilson and Lennie Tristano into his own personal style.
