Monica Zetterlund ( pronunciation : [ ˌmoːnika ˈsɛtːəɹlɵnd ], born September 20, 1937 in Hagfors , † May 12, 2005 in Stockholm ; born Monica Nilsson ) was a Swedish singer and actress.

Live and act

Zetterlund acted in more than 20 films and television series, including 1971 in The Emigrants at the side of Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow . She was also a noted jazz singer. With the title En gång i Stockholm she took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden in 1963 . Without a single point, she ended up in last place. However, this did not detract from their popularity in their home country.

As a jazz singer she had her first successes with Arne Domnérus between 1958 and 1960 after making her debut as a young singer in her parents' band and with Ib Glindemann . Festivals all over Europe brought her together with the visiting “Americans in Europe” Lucky Thompson , Kenny Clarke , Thad Jones , Zoot Sims and Red Mitchell . She also went to the studios with many. Their discography is quite modest when it comes to jazz, but rich in content. Her best-known album is the LP on Philips with Bill Evans , whose Waltz for Debby she interpreted in a completely new way.

With Quincy Jones she has recorded some excellent albums - with changing line-ups. Their LP "Swedish Sensation" brings together Sweden's best jazz musicians. It got more commercial in the early 1970s, recording loads of pop between Winchester Cathedral and My Sweet Lord . Her "class" only rarely flashed. In addition, the number of Swedish folk and pop titles grew, which brought in their money, but rather put off jazz fans. It was only after working with Zoot Sims and Red Mitchell that she returned to the clubs between Stockholm, Malmö and Uppsala.

As a result of severe scoliosis , Monica Zetterlund retired from the stage in 1999. On May 12, 2005, she was killed in a fire in her Stockholm apartment. In 2006 she was posthumously awarded the Django d'Or (Sweden) as a legend of jazz .

The “Monica Zetterlunds Park” in Stockholm's Vasastaden district is a reminder of the singer. A teak bench eight meters long and 1.40 meters high begins to play music from Zetterlund as soon as a visitor approaches the bench.
