Emigranten (Original title: Utvandrarna ) is a Swedish drama from 1971, which tells of a group of people who emigrated to the western United States around the mid-19th century. The underlying novel is by Vilhelm Moberg . A related film was made with the same team and the same actors under the title Das neue Land . An alternative title is The Emigrants .

action

In the middle of the 19th century. Kristina and Karl-Oskar live in southern Sweden, in a small community in Småland . They own a small property, but the land is almost sterile. Times are tough anyway: bad weather leads to bad harvests and famine. In the run-up to Christmas 1849 there was a momentous incident when Anna, the first-born child, plagued by hunger, secretly nibbled on the barley groats that were put down to cool down and intended as a feast and overeat so much that she died from it. Now Kristina is convinced of Karl-Oskar's plans to emigrate to the USA. Together with others who have decided to go on the voyage - including a couple fleeing religious persecution and a man trying to escape his marriage - they embark on a rickety sailing ship, on which, after numerous toil and danger, they finally get on ten weeks later achieve their goal. From the east coast they seek their place by steamboat and rail in what is now Minnesota to start a new life.

criticism

“First part of an impressively designed (in the German theatrical version) saga of emigrants and settlers. Formally and personally of extraordinary quality. "

Vincent Canby wrote, "Even if you have reservations about the form and intent of the film, it is difficult not to be impressed by its conception, and especially by the extensive outdoor shots in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Sweden." Said about the acting he, "especially von Sydow and Ullmann, play with a kind of spontaneous truth in looks and gestures, where otherwise nobility, truth and beauty are required."

Remarks

Emigranten was nominated for 5 Oscars and won two Golden Globes (for the best foreign language film and for the best female lead actress), two Guldbagge , a Jussi and the New York Film Critics Circle Award .

Like its sequel, the film was released in an abridged version. In 1981, ZDF broadcast both parts as a four-part mini-series with a total length of 322 minutes.

At the time of its creation, Emigranten was the most expensive Swedish film at $ 2 million.

The GDR version of the film has a running time of 141 minutes.
