Peter Herman van de Locht (born November 9, 1946 in Millingen (Rees) ) is a German-Dutch painter , graphic artist and sculptor who initially emerged as a jazz musician ( alto , tenor and soprano saxophone ).

Live and act

Van de Locht, the son of an architect and master builder, attended the Werkkunstschule Krefeld from 1964 to 1968 after training with Waldemar Kuhn (from 1960) and then the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal until 1969 , where he studied fine arts with Hein Wimmer and Guido Jendritzko .

Van de Locht also played the clarinet . First, Boy Raaymakers brought him in Nijmegen to the Charlestown Jazz Band , where he played Dixieland . In 1967 he switched to free jazz and played on the saxophone in groups such as the Free Music Quintet, Free Jazz Quartet and Group Music . From 1969 to 1970 he studied at the Institute for Sonology at the University of Utrecht . As a musician he played with Peter Kowald from 1970 to 1974 and also with the rock group Sweet Smoke , and then worked with Musica Negativa . In 1970 he took part in the Venice Biennale . In 1979 he ended his musical career and concentrated on sculpture.

In 1977 he and his brother Klaus van de Locht (1942–2003) had an exhibition in Wesel : Two Lower Rhine Artists in the Netherlands . In 1981/1982 he took part in the international stone carving symposium in Nordhorn and contributed some works to the art path conceived there . In 1994 he received the Art Prize of the Artists , Düsseldorf.

Between 1977 and 1989 he was a lecturer at the Art School in Arnhem and from 1989 to 2005 at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht . In 2008 he received a professorship for sculpture at the University of Shanghai .
