Sara Magdalena "Malena" Ernman (born November 4, 1970 in Uppsala ) is a Swedish opera singer with the voices soprano and mezzo-soprano . She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and represented Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 .

Career as an opera singer

Ernman sang in amateur choirs as a child and, after discovering her talent, was trained at the Royal Music Academy in Stockholm . Her debut took place in the role of Kaja in Sven-David Sandström's Staden .

She performs in the fields of early music and bel canto , contemporary opera as well as with the usual repertoire of her vocal subject (coloratura) - mezzo-soprano . She has worked with conductors like Daniel Barenboim , William Christie , Daniel Harding , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , René Jacobs and Teodor Currentzis . She made her debut at the Theater an der Wien in 2007 as Sesto in Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto and has since performed there regularly in leading roles.

Since her daughter Greta Thunberg convinced her not to travel by air for reasons of climate protection, she has turned down international engagements if they cannot be reached by train.

In 2009 Ernman took part in the Melodifestivalen , the Swedish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , with the title La voix , and won the final on March 14, 2009. So she qualified for participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow . In the final she finished 21st; the Norwegian Alexander Rybak won .

family

Ernman has been married to music producer and actor Svante Thunberg since 2004 . The couple have two daughters, of whom the elder, born in 2003, Greta achieved worldwide fame as a climate protection activist in 2018 . Her younger daughter Beata Ernman made her first appearances as a singer and campaigned against bullying with her song Bara du vill , with which she was seen in the shows Malou Efter Tio and BingoLotto on the Swedish private television broadcaster TV 4 .

In August 2014, her then 11-year-old daughter Greta Thunberg fell seriously ill. Her critical condition lasted for several months and she was eventually diagnosed with, among other things, Asperger's Syndrome . Her daughter's acute period of illness put such a strain on Ernman and her family that she collapsed several times during her professional career and some performances were stopped. After the crisis was over, she turned to the national daily Expressen , which then reported in detail. She said she wanted to help other families in a similar situation. She also wrote a book about this time until Greta became known worldwide.
