Ingvar Wixell

Karl Gustaf Ingvar Wixell (born May 7, 1931 in Luleå , † October 8, 2011 in Malmö ) was a Swedish opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Wixell, born in Luleå in 1931, made his debut in 1955 as Papageno in Mozart's Magic Flute at the Royal Opera in Stockholm , where he was engaged until 1967. This was followed by appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London , the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City .

From 1967 he was part of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper Berlin for over 30 years. He became famous as Figaro , Escamillo , Amonasro , Scarpia and in the title roles of Rigoletto , Simon Boccanegra , Don Giovanni , Falstaff and Eugen Onegin . Wixell ended his career in 2003 with the role of music teacher in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss .

He represented Sweden in 1965 with the title Annorstädes vals at the Eurovision Song Contest in Naples and reached 10th place with three points each from Finland and Denmark. He played the previous Swedish preliminary round Melodifestivalen alone and sang all six tracks himself.
