Måns Zelmerlöw

Måns Petter Albert Sahlén Zelmerlöw (born June 13, 1986 in Lund ) is a Swedish pop singer , model and presenter . As the interpreter of the song Heroes , he won the 60th Eurovision Song Contest on May 23, 2015 and thus achieved the sixth victory for Sweden in this competition. He moderated the following Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm together with Petra Mede . In the following years he also made repeated guest appearances at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Life

Måns Zelmerlöw is the son of Brigitta Sahlén, a professor of speech therapy at Lund University , and Sven-Olof Zelmerlöw, a specialist in surgery. Zelmerlöw attended the Lars Erik Larsson School in Lund, a music-oriented branch that mainly focused on choral singing. As early as 2002 he played one of Joseph's eleven brothers in a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , which was shown at Slagthuset in Malmö .

Private life

Zelmerlöw has a younger sister. Zelmerlöw's hobbies include padel tennis , soccer , tennis and golf . On December 26, 2004, Zelmerlöw and his family survived the tsunami while staying in Khao Lak , Thailand .

From 2008 to 2011 he was in a relationship with the Swedish singer Marie Serneholt , a former member of the Swedish pop band A * Teens .

In March 2014, as a participant in a Swedish cooking show, Zelmerlöw said that homosexuality was “avvikelse” (roughly “deviating from [the norm]”). Zelmerlöw apologized several times for his remarks and claimed to have been very drunk that evening. In the course of his nomination for the Eurovision Song Contest , the debate about his statements came up again, but the artist was defended by numerous Swedish, gay and Eurovision-related media. Ronny Larsson, editor of the Swedish LGBT magazine QX , has spoken out extensively on the matter for PinkNews .

After his victory at the ESC, he took a stand on the stage on this topic: "I just want to say that we are all heroes, no matter who we love, who we are or what we believe."

In 2016 he started a relationship with the English actress Ciara Janson . They got engaged in July 2017 and in December the two announced that they were expecting their first child together. Their son Albert Ossian Zelmerlöw was born on May 25, 2018. Ciara Janson already has a son from a previous relationship who was born in 2014. You live in London. The couple married in Croatia on September 5, 2019.

Career

2005: Idol

Zelmerlöw participated in the Swedish edition of Idols in 2005 , the national edition of Pop Idol . After eight weeks on the show, he eventually finished fifth.

2006: Let's Dance

In 2006, Zelmerlöw took part in the first season of the Swedish version of Let's Dance and won with his dance partner Maria Karlsson.

Zelmerlöw starred Danny Zuko in the Swedish version of Grease in Malmö that same year .

2007-08: Melodifestivalen and Stand By For ...

On February 17, 2007 Zelmerlöw took part in one of the preliminary rounds of the Melodifestivalen 2007 with the song Cara Mia . He moved into the final and took third place there. In the Swedish charts , Cara Mia later reached the top position . His album Stand By For… also climbed to number 1 on the Swedish charts. Other single releases were Brother oh Brother , Work of Art (Da Vinci) and Miss America .

On October 5, 2007, Zelmerlöw was the presenter of the program Lilla Melodifestivalen on the Swedish TV channel SVT.

In late 2007 / early 2008 Zelmerlöw played the role of Tommy in the musical Footloose , which was performed in Gothenburg and Stockholm . In 2008 he was part of the Diggiloo Tour alongside the other singers Lasse Holm, Linda Bengtzing, Lotta Engberg, Thomas Pettersson, Molly Sandén and Nanne Grönvall.

2009: Melodifestivalen and MZW

On February 14th, 2009 Zelmerlöw presented the song Hope & Glory in the 2nd preliminary round of the Melodifestivalen 2009. In the final on March 14th, 2009 he finished in 4th place, after having led in the meantime. The jury rating had lifted Hope & Glory to 1st place, but in the televoting the song only reached 5th place. On March 25, 2009, the second studio album MZW was released , which reached number 1 in the Swedish charts.

2010–12: Moderation Melodifestivalen and Allsång på Skansen

At the Melodifestivalen 2010, Zelmerlöw hosted the program together with Christine Meltzer and Dolph Lundgren . At the opening of the show of the second chances ( Andra Chansen ) he sang the song A View To A Kill by Duran Duran . In the finale, all three presenters sang the song Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor .

In April the single Precious To Me by Maria Haukaas Storeng and Zelmerlöw was released.

On November 15, 2010 Zelmerlöw released the Christmas album Christmas With Friends , on which he sings English and Swedish Christmas carols with guest singers. The album was re-released on December 19, 2011 under the title Kära Vinter .

In 2010 Zelmerlöw also played the role of Romeo in the musical Romeo and Juliet , which premiered at Göta Lejon in Stockholm in December. He also appeared in the associated casting show Jakten på Julia , in which the role of Julia was cast. Lisette Pagler won this.

Måns Zelmerlöw 2013

In January 2011 it was announced that Zelmerlöw is hosting the program Allsång på Skansen , a popular music event that has been held every summer since 1990 (before that, irregularly since 1979) at the Skansen Open Air Museum on Djurgården in Stockholm and is broadcast live on TV (SVT) . National and international musicians from very different genres perform on this program and after their performance they sing an “Allsång” song from a fixed songbook, in which the audience sings along and the text is faded in for the television audience. He also moderated the show in the summer of 2012 and 2013.

In February 2011 Zelmerlöw took over the dubbing voice of the Flynn Rider in the Swedish version of Rapunzel - Neu gepöhnt (Swedish title: Trassel).

In 2012 the single Ett lyckligt slut was released, which was created in cooperation with the Children's Cancer Aid (Barncancerfonden). He also sang the title Mountain Duet alongside Anja Steinlechner on the album of the Swedish male choir Orphei Drängar .

2013–14: Barcelona Sessions

In March 2013, Zelmerlöw announced plans for his third studio album, Barcelona Sessions , and released the single Broken Parts . In September 2013, the second single Beautiful Life was released. The album was released on February 5, 2014.

Zelmerlöw took part in the Melodifestivalen again, this time as one of the songwriters for the song Hello Goodbye, singers Erik Segerstedt and Tone Damil. The song reached the second chance round (Andra Chansen).

In autumn 2013, Zelmerlöw again took on a leading role in a musical, that of Dante in the Swedish new edition of the musical Spök , alongside Loa Falkman, Sussie Eriksson and Lena Philipsson.

2013 was also the founding year of the Zelmerlöw & Björkman Foundation, a foundation of the former Swedish tennis player Jonas Björkman and Zelmerlöws, which supports children and young people in need in South Africa.

2015: Victory at the Eurovision Song Contest and Perfectly Damaged

Zelmerlöw managed to get into the final of the Swedish preliminary decision on March 14, 2015, which he won at the fourth semi-final of the Melodifestival 2015 on February 28th with the title Heroes . On May 23, 2015, he represented the country at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna , from which he also emerged as the winner, having already been traded as the most promising favorite in advance. He won with 365 points.

The album Perfectly Damaged was released on June 5, 2015. During the summer he had several appearances at Swedish festivals and from September toured Europe. The second single Should´ve Gone Home was released.

2016–18: Moderation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 and Chameleon

On December 14, 2015 it was announced that Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede , who had already moderated the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 , will be moderating the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 . On the show he presented his song Heroes and his new single Fire In The Rain . With Mede he presented the interval acts Die Geschichte des ESC and the song Love Love Peace Peace , which was later also released as a single.

In the summer of 2016, the single was Belong by Joshua Radin published sings on the well Zelmerlöw.

In October 2016 the Swedish TV series Chevaleresk was broadcast, presented by Alexander Wiberg and Zelmerlöw.

The seventh studio album Zelmerlöws Chameleon will be released in December 2016 . Hanging On To Nothing , Glorious and Happyland were released as singles .

In 2017 Zelmerlöw took over the Swedish dubbing voice for Branch (Swedish: Kvist) in the animated film Trolls .

Zelmerlöw was involved in the soundtrack of the French remake of the musical Saturday Night Fever (musical) .

In addition, Zelmerlöw was seen in a sketch at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 , in which he shows the three Ukrainian presenters how to become the best ESC presenter. He commented on the competition alongside Edward af Sillén for the Swedish TV broadcaster SVT.

In autumn 2017 Zelmerlöw made his acting debut in the second season (episode 7) of the Swedish crime and mystery series Jordskott - The Revenge of the Forest .

In spring 2018, Zelmerlöw became co-host alongside Mel Giedroyc in the British preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest: BBC Eurovision You Decide. In the opening number he sang an ABBA medley alongside former British ESC participant Lucie Jones.

In March 2018, the second season of the Swedish TV series Chevaleresk was broadcast. Zelmerlöw and Wiberg also published the book Den Moderna Gentlemannen for the series .

2019-today: Interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest and Time

In February 2019, Zelmerlöw again hosted Mel Giedroyc in the British preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest: BBC Eurovision You Decide.

March 2019 he released the first single Walk With Me from his new album together with the Swedish singer Dotter . They presented the song for the first time in the Andra Chansen program at Melodifestivalen 2019.

At the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 , Zelmerlöw was part of the interval act Switch Song and sang the song Fuego by ESC winner Eleni Foureira , which was also released as a single. His title Heroes was sung by the ESC winner Conchita Wurst .

In May 2019, the singles Better Now and Grow Up To Be You were also released.

Zelmerlöw's eighth studio album Time was released on October 18, 2019 . Other singles from this were One in November, On My Way in April 2020 and Mirror in August 2020.

In February 2020 Zelmerlöw was part of the jury for the Australian preliminary decision of the Eurovision Song Contest, Australia Decides . He also sang the newly released single Walk With Me with Dami Im .

On April 10, 2020, Morgan Sulele and Zelmerlöw released the single Gamle Dager together . The song contains Norwegian lyrics sung by Sulele and Swedish lyrics sung by Zelmerlöw.

In the online replacement show Europe Shine A Light of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, which was canceled due to the corona pandemic, Zelmerlöw presented an acoustic version of his former winning title Heroes .

Trivia

Zelmerlöw, referring to the popularity of the Viennese dessert of the same name, described himself as a Swedish bomb after his victory .
