The 60th Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 19 to 23, 2015 in the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna . So was the Austrian capital after 1967 for the second time host the Euro Vision Song Contest after Conchita Wurst with the song Rise Like a Phoenix the Euro Vision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen ( Denmark had won). The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) organized the competition. The theme of the competition was Building Bridges ( English for building bridges ).
The competition for Sweden was the song Heroes, performed by Måns Zelmerlöw and written by Linnea Deb, Joy Deb and Anton Hård af Segerstad, with a total of 365 points, ahead of Russia with 303 points and Italy with 292 points. For the first time in the history of the competition, not only the winner, but the two first-placed winners scored over 300 points. For the first time since the introduction of the combined rating in 2009 , the top entry in televoting (Italy) did not win. Sweden won the competition for the sixth time and moved up to second place in competition history behind Ireland, which has won seven times so far.
On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, Australia received an invitation to participate from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), as the event is very popular there and has been broadcast for 30 years. A total of 27 countries competed in the final, more than ever before.
Austria and Germany - as host country or one of the five big donors and both seeded in the final without taking part in the semi-finals - remained without points. Austria was placed ahead of Germany, because in the event of a tie, further factors are used to determine the order, in this case the starting order. For Germany it was the third and for the host country Austria the fourth participation without points.
For the first time since the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, a country remained in the final without points and for the first time since the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997 two countries received no points simultaneously. In addition, it was the first case in the history of the ESC that the host country remained without points.
venue
The 60th Eurovision Song Contest took place in Austria as the Austrian participant Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen , Denmark .
Numerous cities had expressed their interest in hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. In advance, there was speculation that the city of Salzburg would be interested in the event, which the city rejected.
At a first meeting on Monday, May 19, 2014, the ORF and the EBU agreed to only hold the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in closed halls without daylight. On May 29, 2014, the ORF published the following criteria for the hall: a minimum capacity of 10,000 spectators, it must be available six weeks before the competition, a minimum ceiling height of 15 m and an appropriate press center for around 1500 reporters in the Have proximity and provide space for the sponsors and their approximately 1000 guests. The application deadline for the venue for the Eurovision Song Contest ended on June 13, 2014.
On June 21, 2014, ORF announced that it would hold the Eurovision Song Contest either in the Wiener Stadthalle , in the Stadthalle Graz or in the Olympiahalle Innsbruck . This meant that the temporary venues in Vienna, the Vienna-Schwechat airport , the event site at Schwarzlsee in Unterpremstätten in Styria , the Oberwart exhibition center , the Wörthersee stadium in Klagenfurt and the exhibition center in Wels were out of the running.

Live shows and tickets
There were two other audience shows before each live TV show. The day before the found jury shows take place, after which the national juries their voting duties. They were recorded and should have been used if the live TV show had a broadcast failure. The afternoon family shows were the final runs before the live TV show. Their name comes from the fact that they are particularly suitable for families with children who want to see the show live but do not want to stay up late into the night.

format
motto
The ORF looked for the right motto in a selection process . The slogan Building Bridges emerged as the winner from more than one hundred submissions . This motto was deliberately chosen because Austria has often acted as a bridge between East and West in history and the idea of tolerance from Conchita Wurst is to be continued. Against the backdrop of the Eurovision Song Contest , music serves to connect countries, cultures and languages.
logo
The logo was introduced on November 25, 2014. It is a luminous sphere which bears the official name "The Sphere" (in German: "The Sphere"). The logo should represent the unifying and diversity of the event .
"Postcards"
This year's idea for the small clips that will present the country before their performance was officially announced on March 10, 2015. This year the motto Building Bridges is to be implemented.
Each clip begins with images from the artist's home country. Then they will receive a package at their door containing an invitation to Austria and an item. As soon as they look up from this package, the artists are transferred to a place in Austria, where they can experience a typical local activity from the fields of culture , sport , business and tradition to modern times with the object .
The clips end with a freeze by the respective artist on a song contest poster near a Vienna landmark.
Official album
The official album with all 40 songs on the show was released in German-speaking countries as follows:
- April 10, 2015 - iTunes and Google Play Store release
- April 17, 2015 - Publication on all other digital platforms
- April 20, 2015 - Released as a physical CD
In addition, the opening song Building Bridges was released digitally as a single on May 18, 2015 .
The official DVD , which contains the recordings of the three live shows as well as bonus material, was released on June 22, 2015.
Stage design
On December 27, 2014 it was announced that the stage design will be designed by Florian Wieder .
ORF television director Kathrin Zechner said that the stage "represents the bridge from the past to the present and the future and is a symbol for the message of mutual respect that we want to convey".
Again she was responsible for the stage design of the Eurovision Song Contests 2011 and 2012 .
The stage design was officially released on January 20, 2015. The stage consists of 1288 individual columns and measures 44 meters in width, 14.3 meters in height and up to 22 meters in depth. The LED pillars can produce a variety of lighting effects, as can the stage floor with a diameter of 11 meters. In the background there is another LED wall 22 meters wide and 8.5 meters high.
60th anniversary
To mark its 60th anniversary, the BBC organized the Eurovision Song Contest's Greatest Hits event on March 31, 2015 in London's Hammersmith Apollo . The show was moderated by Graham Norton and Petra Mede . The event was recorded and will be broadcast in different countries until the contest. In Germany , the recording was shown on NDR television and MDR television on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the same time from 11:15 p.m., Peter Urban commented. The current Austrian ESC commentator Andi Knoll and the current Austrian points spokesperson Kati Bellowitsch moderated the semi-final draw and will moderate the opening ceremony and the ESC live shows. Riem Higazi and Kati Bellowitsch will take turns leading the press conferences.

Attendees
countries
On July 10, 2014, the EBU announced that it would move the application period from mid-December to mid-October. The EBU and ORF thought that due to the 60th anniversary it was necessary to select an early date in order to get the best result for a big anniversary show in May of the following year. The official application period ended on September 15, 2014, the grace period for undecided countries on October 10, 2014. The list of all participants was published by the EBU on December 23, 2014. Serbia and Cyprus returned to the competition after a one-year break , and the Czech Republic after a five-year break. Meanwhile, Ukraine stayed away from the event due to financial reasons and the current situation in the country . In addition, the songs of all participants had to be determined by March 16, 2015, for the meeting of the heads of delegation.
Even Australia joined for the first time in the competition. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the competition, the country received an invitation from the EBU and was allowed to take part directly in the final. If Australia had actually won the contest, a European country would have been the venue for the next year.
According to this, 40 countries took part in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.
Other countries
On April 29, 2015 it was announced that delegations from Kosovo , Kazakhstan , Tunisia and Morocco would be in Vienna and observe the ESC.
Kazakhstan has been broadcasting the Eurovision Song Contest live since 2010 and has been applying for the ESC since 2008, but it always failed due to the lack of EBU membership. EBU member Tunisia wanted to take part in the competition in 1977 but eventually withdrew. EBU member Morocco took part once in 1980, was penultimate and has not participated since then.
Recurring performers
After Amber won the Maltese preliminary round , she represented Malta at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. In 2012 she supported Kurt Calleja as a background singer at his performance, and the Belarusian Uzari , in 2011, accompanied Anastassija Winnikawa as a background singer. Raay , one half of the Slovenian duo Maraaya, was the background singer for Tinkara Kovač in 2014 .
The participant from San Marino , Michele Perniola , already took part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013 and reached the tenth place. Anita Simoncini took 2014 as a member of The Peppermints , which were fifteenth, at JESC part. After Nevena Božović and the Tolmachevy Sisters, the two are the third participants in history to take part in both competitions.
Inga Arschakjan that Armenia already in 2009 together with her sister Anusch the ESC in Moscow had represented, returns as a member of Genealogy 2015 competition back.
Elnur Hüseynov , who represented Azerbaijan at the debut in 2008 together with Samir Cavadzadə , returned to the competition in 2015.

final
The final took place on May 23, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. ( CEST ).
Estonia , Lithuania , Belgium and Georgia returned to the finals after two years, Albania , Cyprus and Serbia after three years, Israel after five years and Latvia after seven years. Albania, Israel, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belgium and Georgia were eliminated in the semifinals in the respective periods mentioned. Cyprus and Serbia each eliminated once and suspended once. Australia took part in the final for the first time in 2015.
The countries of the Big Five (Germany, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy), Australia and the host country Austria qualified directly for the final. There were also ten countries from each of the two semi-finals, so that 27 countries competed in the final, more than ever before.
The finale began with a single player in which the Vienna Philharmonic presented music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven . Afterwards, people from all Austrian federal states were shown who form the official logo of the event "The Sphere". The opening ceremony ended in the Wiener Stadthalle, where part of the song Merci, Chérie of the first winner for Austria, Udo Jürgens , could be heard. It was played on the violin by Lidia Baich .
Last year's winner Conchita Wurst then sang the official anthem of the competition (music: David Bronner , Dorothee Freiberger, Kurt Pongratz; text: David Malin), Building Bridges, together with the rapper Left Boy , the Vienna Boys' Choir and the multinational “Superar” choir . They were accompanied by the ORF radio symphony orchestra. The highlight of the opening was the walk of the finalists over the Magic Bridge through the audience onto the show stage.
During the televoting, the drummer Martin Grubinger performed and presented a nine-minute drum medley of classical symphonies ( 2nd symphony (Mahler) , 8th symphony (Bruckner) and 3rd symphony (Mahler) ), which were interpreted in a modern way.

The lines are arranged according to the order in which they appear. The columns are arranged in the order in which the points were awarded (with the exception of Portugal, Estonia and Georgia). |
The lowest (red background) and highest (green background) total values are marked in the table.
- The fewest jury points: Poland - 2nd
- The fewest televoting points: Austria - 0
- The fewest overall votes: Germany and Austria - 0
- The fewest total points: Germany and Austria - 0
- Most jury points: Sweden - 363
- Most televoting points: Italy - 366
- Most overall votes: Sweden and Italy - 39
- Most total points: Sweden - 365
The order in which the countries announced their points was determined on the basis of the jury results from the jury show the day before in such a way that as much tension as possible was generated.
In the beginning, Italy briefly switched leadership back and forth with Russia. With Belarus' voting (6th announcement), Russia temporarily took the lead. Only with the ranking of the United Kingdom (27th announcement) did Sweden take the lead and stayed there until the end. With the points from Cyprus (36th announcement), Sweden was the winner.
During the scoring, there were technical difficulties with the transmission in Portugal, Estonia and Georgia (which were intended as 5th, 13th and 30th scoring respectively). They were therefore initially skipped and made up at the end of the other announcements.
Shortly after the end of the event, the juries of Macedonia and Montenegro were subsequently disqualified. For both countries, only televoting positions were taken into account.

Points speaker
People with a connection to the Eurovision Song Contest were preferred as point speakers. Since the lines to Portugal, Estonia and Georgia broke off during the vote, these votes were called again after the Norwegian point allocation.

Discussion about the rating system
Of the seven countries Australia , Germany , France , Italy , Austria , Spain and the United Kingdom that did not make it to the semi-finals, four finished in the last four places. The affected countries reacted with analyzes of the poor performance and considered further measures, such as withdrawing from the competition.
In an interview with NDR, Thomas Schreiber discussed - both immediately after the event on television alongside Ann Sophie and later with Jan Feddersen - that differing evaluations by the jury and audience of a country cancel each other out and, in combination, result in a placement outside the points being able to lead. For example, the German contribution in Albania's televoting was in 7th place, but in the jury it was 16, which resulted in 12th place. Conversely, the juries in Finland also rated this entry 7th, in Belgium and Israel even 5th, but the televotings (19, 19 and 21) turned the combined results to places outside the points (11, 12 and 13). Overall, the German contribution received good midfield positions in 20, i.e. more than half of the 39 country ratings with rank 17 or higher, eight of them with rank 11 or 12 just outside the points, just not. Peter Urban rated these facts as "a lot of bad luck". Despite the surprising disappointment in the end, neither saw any reason to question the system of combined ratings.
In a very similar way, Austria's contribution achieved middle places from 11 to 19 in 20 of the 39 country ratings. Although some juries rated the contribution very high, for example in Georgia and Latvia in 3rd place and in Belgium in 6th place, the weak televoting ( 25, 21, 26) as in Germany, ultimately only for combined places 13, 11 and 17 and thus zero points.
As early as 2010, in the year after the introduction of the current jury-televoting mixed evaluation, the EBU had published a table with fictitious points from pure jury or audience votes, from which the partly - according to the EBU - "significantly different point levels of juries and Televoters ”emerge. In contrast to the evaluation of the contributions from Germany and Austria in 2015, in which the mixed evaluation led to a significant devaluation overall, the combined evaluations in 2010 were regularly between the pure jury and televoting results, even if there were major deviations.

- On the occasion of the Eurovision Song Contest, the City of Vienna had the Ampelmännchen changed to traffic light pairs at 49 locations throughout Vienna, including same-sex couples. Because of the supposedly enormous popularity on the part of the tourists, but also because of an alleged advertising value, the traffic light pairs are to remain in their current form after the song contest on the initiative of Transport Councilor Maria Vassilakou (Greens).
- Albania : The actual winning song of the Albanian preliminary decision (Festivali i Këngës 53) Diell was replaced by the song I'm Alive . The reason given by the interpreter Elhaida Dani was that the original song had been withdrawn by the composer's team and was no longer available for performance at the Eurovision Song Contest.
- Armenia : The Genealogy group was the first group in the history of the competition whose members came from five different continents. The members were from Ethiopia, France, Japan, the United States, Australia and Armenia, among others. In addition, the title of the song was changed from Don't Deny to Face the Shadow .
- Australia : Australia made its unofficial debut in 2014 with Jessica Mauboy as a break filler. On February 10, 2015, ORF and EBU confirmed that Australia would compete in the 2015 Song Contest. However, in this case Australia would also have qualified for the 2016 competition.
- Germany : The German preliminary decision, Our Song for Austria , actually won Andreas Kümmert with Heart of Stone . In the televoting he got more than two-thirds of the votes, but he refused to participate, so Ann Sophie moved up with the song Black Smoke .

- Georgia : During Nina Sublatti's appearance in the finale, the fog machine did not work properly, so Sublatti disappeared into the fog for a short time. Sublatti was angry on Facebook and some fans accused the organizers of sabotaging the performance; they also assumed that Georgia would have placed better without this mistake.
- Greece and Cyprus : For the first time since 1997 , neither Greece nor Cyprus gave the other country 12 points.
- Iceland : Hera Björk , the Icelandic participant in the ESC 2010 , who reached 19th place in Oslo , supported María Ólafs as a background singer in 2015 .
