The 19th Eurovision Young Musicians took place on August 23, 2018 at Usher Hall in Edinburgh, UK. It was the first time since 2008 that the United Kingdom has hosted a Eurovision event and the second time that the country has hosted the EYM.

The competition was part of the Edinburgh International Festival . The participants were supported in their performances by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Thomas Dausgaard .

The winner of the competition was pianist Ivan Bessonov, who competed for Russia and was thus able to claim Russia's first victory at the Eurovision Young Musicians. In addition, Bessonov is the first winner since 2000 to win the competition with the piano . Second, however, was the violinist Nikola Pajanovic from Slovenia.

Germany reached the finals with the violinist Mira Foron, but could not place in the top two.

venue

On October 27, 2016, the EBU launched a call for applications to host the competition. Only Hungary showed public interest in the 2018 competition. On October 22, 2017, it was announced that Great Britain would be the host of the 2018 competition. It was announced on October 30th that Edinburgh would be the venue. On October 31, 2017 it was announced that the two semi-finals would take place on August 18 and 19, 2018 in the Edinburgh Festival Theater and the final would be held in Usher Hall . The 1972 Eurovision Song Contest took place here.

format

On October 31, 2017, the EBU announced that the two semi-finals, which last took place in 2012 , will return in 2018 . These are each divided into three shows with three participants each. A total of six countries will qualify for the final. The winner of the competition will be decided by a jury and will receive several prizes. Among other things, the winner receives a specially made trophy and € 7,000 in prize money. In addition, the winner will play with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra next season. The second place in the competition, on the other hand, receives prize money of € 3,000. The remaining participants will not receive any prizes.

Moderation

On August 6, 2018 it was announced that Petroc Trelawny and Josie D'Arby will host the 2018 competition. Petroc Trelawny is a radio host for classical music, while Josie D'Arby is a television host for various cultural programs.

jury

On August 10, 2018, the EBU announced the jurors for the competition. There are two juries in total: one for the two semi-finals and one for the final. In both juries, each juror should rate the performance with 1–10 points independently of the other. The following criteria are observed by the judges in the semifinals and finals:

  • technical accuracy
  • Quality of the sound
  • interpretation
  • Appearance

After each juror has assigned his points, these are added up and the result is then presented to the jury first. If they agree to the result, the six finalists will be announced in a random order in the semifinals. In the final, only the first three places will be known after this process. It was also announced that the jury in the final will not know the results of the semi-final jury in order to avoid influencing it.
