The 59th Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 6 to 10, 2014 in the Danish capital, Copenhagen . After Lise Cabble , Julia Fabrin Jakobsen and Thomas Stengaard won the 58th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö ( Sweden ) with the song Only Teardrops on May 18, 2013, interpreted by Emmelie de Forest , Danmarks Radio (DR) won the Commissioned to organize the Eurovision Song Contest. This is the third time that Denmark has hosted the event after 1964 and 2001 .
The competition for Austria was won by the song Rise Like a Phoenix , composed by the team of writers Alexander “Ali” Zuckowski , Julian Maas , Joey Patulka and Charlie Mason, performed by Conchita Wurst . This was the second victory for Austria after 1966 and with 290 points the fourth-highest victory in the history of the competition.
Conchita Wurst appeared as a drag queen . The figure and the performance polarized strongly and led to different reactions. The victory was partially commented very negatively, while others viewed their victory as a positive sign of tolerance.
Second and third place went to contributions from the Netherlands and Sweden . Montenegro and San Marino were able to move into a final for the first time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest.
venue
On September 2, 2013, the host broadcaster DR and the EBU announced that the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 would take place in Copenhagen. The choice of the hall complex on the site of the former B&W shipyard as the venue gave the EBU the opportunity to modernize the Eurovision Song Contest with an innovative TV show. The island of Refshaleøen, on which the old shipyard is located, was included in the planning and, as Eurovision Island, should offer visitors a unique experience.
The city of Aalborg withdrew its application beforehand because there were not enough hotel rooms available.
On June 25, 2013, the city of Fredericia withdrew its application because its intended venue, the MesseC, did not meet the standards of the DR, according to which the entire building must not have any pillars that obstruct the view and must have a minimum height of 16 meters.
On June 28, 2013, the stadium operator Parken Sport & Entertainment announced that the Parken Stadium was no longer “in the running” to host the event. The actual user of the stadium, FC Copenhagen , used the venue for its games.

motto
The official motto of the event was #JoinUs . It was a welcome greeting to the people who traveled to Denmark and became part of the event there. The organizers wanted to enable the visitors to be as close as possible to their candidate.
The complementary logo was a blue, shining diamond, which symbolizes the variety of performing artists.
National juries
The national juries decided 50% of the final result at the Eurovision Song Contest. For this, the members of a country met and saw the dress rehearsal of the shows together. Each member then created a ranking list of all contributions for the evening based on the voice, composition and originality of the song. Everyone should do this independently of the others. As soon as all lists were completed, they were checked by the EBU and converted into points. The following jurors sat on the jury in the German-speaking countries:
Belgium

New rules for jury voting
The EBU announced on September 20, 2013 that the rules of jury voting would be slightly modified. Following rumors of votes being bought, the names of the jurors in each country will be announced before the first semifinals. A juror may not participate in the jury voting for more than two years in a row. Furthermore, the detailed results of each individual juror as well as the aggregated results of the national jury and televoting are to be announced immediately after the final.
Attendees
countries
After the registration deadline was postponed several times to January 9, 2014, 36 countries had agreed to participate. There was a special regulation for Slovenia, so that it could not finally register for the competition until January 17, 2014. With 37 countries, fewer than last took part in Athens in 2006 .
Portugal and Poland took part in the ESC again after a one or two year break. Portugal was the country with the most participations at the time, never winning or even reaching the top five. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia and Cyprus canceled their participation for financial reasons. The Turkey did not take as last year again in the contest, as the country and the equivalent weight of the jury and the televoting in the points classification does not agree with the status of the "Big Five".
As in previous years, the “Big Five” (Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) and hosts Denmark were automatically qualified for the final on May 10, 2014. The other countries were divided into two semi-finals and had to qualify for the final there.
Recurring performers
Valentina Monetta is the fourth interpreter in history to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest three times in a row. In the past, Lys Assia and Corry Brokken took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 , 1957 and 1958 , as did Udo Jürgens in 1964 , 1965 and 1966 , with each of these three performers winning the competition at least once. In the Swedish preliminary round, Helena Paparizou appeared with her song Survivor and made it to the final. In 2005 she won the Eurovision Song Contest for Greece. The Russian Tolmacheva sisters won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 and after the Serbian singer Nevena Božović (group Moje 3 , Serbia 2013) are the second participants to take part in both competitions. With Paula Seling and Ovi , the third-placed 2010 participants took part again.
country | Interpreter | Previous year of participation | Previous placement |
This year's placement |
---|---|---|---|---|
Romania | Paula Seling & Ovi | 2010 | 3rd (of 39) | 12. (−9) |
San Marino | Valentina Monetta | 2012 and 2013 | 14. (SF) and 11. (SF) | 24. |
National preliminary decisions
Belgium
The program Eurosong 2014 took place on March 16 at the Sports Palace in Antwerp . The final was moderated by Peter Van de Veire and Eva Daeleman. There were already three semifinals before the final. The later winner, Axel Hirsoux, with his song Mother was determined 50% by televoting and 50% by a seven-member international jury.
Germany
The broadcast Our Song for Denmark took place on March 13, 2014 at 8:30 p.m. in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne . It was transmitted in the first . The band Elaiza , who had secured the wildcard in the club concert, won the preliminary decision and thus became the German contribution in Copenhagen.
Austria
After the Austrian jury decided to internally choose an interpreter to represent the country in Copenhagen in 2014, ORF selected the singer and travesty artist Tom Neuwirth alias Conchita Wurst . Wurst had already planned to represent the country in Baku in 2012, but was narrowly defeated by the Trackshittaz duo in the decision show . On October 7th, the ORF announced that the song would also be selected internally. Rise Like a Phoenix was unveiled on March 18th.
Switzerland
On February 1, 2014, the final of the Swiss preliminary decision took place in the Bodensee-Arena in Kreuzlingen under the title “The Great Decision Show”. In order to get to this final, each candidate had to face an online voting in the first phase, in which the submitted contributions were evaluated by the viewers of the SRF by voting. In the second step, the qualified participants were assessed by a jury of experts so that each Swiss broadcaster could send at least one representative to the final. There it was finally decided who would represent Switzerland in Copenhagen. In addition to the potential ESC contribution, the candidates each sang a cover version of a well-known song. In the evaluation of the candidates, 50 percent each from the specialist jury and the television audience went into account. Singer Sebalter won with his song Hunter of Stars .
The following is the result of the Swiss preliminary decision:

Semifinals
draw
The semi-final draw took place on January 20, 2014 in Copenhagen. 28 countries were divided into six pots of the same size as possible. The pots were divided according to the voting pattern of the past ten years. Then the countries were drawn to one of the two semi-finals.
In the run-up, Israel was drawn because of the celebrations for the holiday of Yom HaAtzma'ut on the first day of the first half of the second semi-final. In addition, at the request of the Danish broadcaster DR, the two neighboring countries Denmark, Sweden and Norway, were drawn in a special raffle for the first and second semifinals, respectively, in the first half of each. This should prevent excessive ticket demand from occurring. It was also determined in which semifinals hosts Denmark and the so-called Big 5 countries are entitled to vote. Due to a request from ARD , Germany was assigned voting rights in the second semi-final without a draw. The others were drawn.
The distribution of the pots was made up as follows:
Pot 0 | Pot 1 | Pot 2 | Pot 3 | Pot 4 | Pot 5 | Pot 6 |

The lines are arranged according to the order in which they appear. The columns are arranged in the order in which the points were awarded. |
In the course of the announcement of the voting, Russia initially took the lead. After the first position went back and forth between Hungary and Sweden, Austria took the lead for the first time with France's ranking (12th announcement) and never gave it up until the end. With the points from Ukraine (34th announcement) Austria was already the winner.
Due to a suspicion of fraud by the Georgian jury, this rating was disqualified by the EBU and only the televoting was counted.

Eurovision preview parties
Every year before the actual ESC there are still a few promotional events where the participants present themselves to the press and fans abroad. The preview parties are used for this purpose , although they are not a mandatory event for participants in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2014 there were a total of four events of this kind.
Eurovision Pre-Party Riga 2014
The first Eurovision Pre-Party Riga took place on March 29, 2014 at Andalūzijas Suns in Riga , Latvia . The Latvian participants from the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 PeR performed as guests . The following three countries took part in the event:
Eurovision in Concert 2014
The sixth edition of Eurovision in Concert took place on April 5, 2014 in Melkweg in Amsterdam . Sandra Reemer and Cornald Maas moderated the event. Emmelie de Forest , who won the competition last year, and the group Frizzle Sizzle , who represented the Netherlands at the 1986 Eurovision Song Contest, were invited as guests . The following 25 countries took part:
London Eurovision Party 2014
The London Eurovision Party 2014 took place on April 13, 2014 in the Café de Paris . It was the first time that the event took place in the Café de Paris . The event was moderated by Nicki French and Paddy O'Connell. Scott Fitzgerald , who represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 , was invited as a guest . The following 16 countries took part in the event:
Russian Pre-Party Eurovision 2014
The Russian Pre-Party Eurovision 2014 took place on April 20, 2014 in the Karlsson restaurant . In addition to this year's Eurovision participants, the former Eurovision participants Pasha Parfeny , Filipp Kirkorow , Alsou , Dmitry Kaldun and Natallja Padolskaja also performed . The following seven countries took part in the event:
Comments
According to Rolf Zuckowski , father of the winning composer Alexander and himself a five-time ESC participant in the 1970s and 1980s as well as a famous children's song writer , according to a newspaper author, the ESC “took a good turn with the winning song , away from circus and slapstick towards more serious Music". Zuckowski himself said:
“If Conchita Wurst had sung a high-pitched, eye-catching song as a drag queen with a beard, with corresponding lighting effects and show interludes, she would not have been so successful, she would have only been irritating. But due to their almost static appearance in evening dress, accompanied by a good lighting dramaturgy, the song and the music were in the foreground and inspired Europe. "
Trivia
Suspected fraud against the Georgian jury
All Georgian jury members gave the eight highest points to the same countries. Since this is statistically almost impossible, the voting of the Georgian jury was canceled and instead only the televoting of the Georgian viewers counted for the Georgian points announced in the final.
Reactions to Russia
After the announcement of the progress of the Russian participants in the first semifinals, there were boos in the hall , "as loud and massive as probably never before at a Grand Prix". Even in the final, this was clearly audible whenever Russia received many points. According to media reports, the reason for this was “of course not” the appearance of the Tolmacheva sisters , but rather the policy of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his actions in the Crimean crisis as well as his strict rejection of homosexuality in Russia . The journalist and longtime ESC expert Jan Feddersen as well as the Eurovision Fanclub Germany , however, found this gesture by the audience in the hall to be “unfair”.
