Papaoutai ( Papa où t'es , in German: Papa, where are you? ) Is a song by the Belgian singer Stromae . The first single from his second album √ (Racine carrée) was released in Belgium on May 13, 2013 and started at number one in the local charts.

Music video

The music video for Papaoutai was first released on YouTube on June 6, 2013 . The three-minute and 52-second long video shows a boy in an idyllic 1950s-style housing estate trying to interact with his father. The father, played by Stromae, remains seated motionless on a sofa and his face and body expression are comparable to that of a mannequin while other fathers and sons dance together outside. In the end, the son sits down next to his father on the sofa and assumes the same, rigid and lifeless posture as his father. The video received more than 720 million views.

meaning

The song is about Stromae's inner search for his father, who was a victim of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda . Stromae revealed that this haunted him through to his music career, but also inspired him to write many of his songs.
