Racine carrée (stylized "√") is the second studio album by the Belgian rapper and music producer Stromae . It was released on August 16, 2013.

Like his debut album Cheese , Stromae recorded Racine Carrée in his own studio in Brussels instead of an external one.

The album, most of which was written by Stromae himself, represents several styles of music, such as hip-hop , electro and world . Sometimes several styles of music are mixed together in a single piece.

In terms of content, Stromae sings and raps on various topics, including alienation through social networks ( Carmen ), problems between men and women ( Formidable ("great") or Tous les mêmes ("All the same")), the relationship between northern and northern He translates southern countries ( Humain à l'eau ) himself in an explanatory video with “Human overboard” or cancer ( Quand c'est? (For example “When is it time?”)).

Carmen was inspired by the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet , and jazz trumpeter Bart Maris takes part in Tous les mêmes .

Reviews

In his review of the album, Alexander Cordas from laut.de criticized the fact that Stromae “goes into the effects box too often”. "Almost all clichés of electronic music" appear in his songs, which would give them an unintentionally "amateurish and ironic touch". Positive exceptions are songs without a “synth sound” like Tous les mêmes , where Stromae is accompanied by big band winds.

Luke Päckert of MZEE.com however, stressed particularly positive that Stromae "using brass elements and one or the other influence of African music" genre miss its own paint. In addition, it is strong "how strongly the artist plays with the phonetics of the French language" and "works on much deeper topics than the sound image initially suggests".
