Cheese is the first studio album by the Belgian rapper and music producer Stromae . It was released on June 15, 2010.
History of origin
In 2008 Stromae signed a record deal with Because Music and Kilomaître. Initially working as a volunteer at Radio NRJ , he began posting a series of videos online in 2009. In particular his first single Alors on danse hit the zeitgeist and became an international hit. This enabled Stromae to sign a new record deal with B1 Recordings , a sub-label of Universal Music . On June 15, 2010, his debut album Cheese was released. The album contains a selection of previous works, but also songs that were written for the album. The album cover shows Stromae in the cloakroom known from the making-of videos: tank top and bow tie .

The enhanced version of the album contains the 90s remix by Alors on danse .
Music genre
On his first album, Stromae mixes electronic music , especially techno and house, with rap . The music is based on Faithless . The lyrics are French and in a poetic style. Alors on danse , a sparingly orchestrated house track in the style of the 1980s, is the catchiest song on the album. On the rest of the album, Stromae mixes different influences like jazz and rock music with electronic music. The music is heavily synthesizer- based. The lyrics, performed in rap style throughout without actually being rap, appear very artificial due to the French and thus counteract the coolness of the production. The actually quiet songs and their poetics are also broken ironically. For example , a reference to skin cancer is built into the song Summertime , a typical summer hit . The dodo , mainly composed as a lullaby , on the other hand, destroys the harmony by the fact that the child should not fall asleep safely, but should escape the violence of the father and the infidelity of the mother through sleep.
reception
Katja Scherle from laut.de describes the album Cheese as “solid, but a little monotonous” and praises its “textual quality”. Alexey Eremenko sees the album as an above-average house album, but criticizes that Cheese would only contain one hit in eleven different versions. Ultimately, Stromaes debut could not live up to the high expectations after Alors on danse .

Singles
A total of six songs from the album chartered in at least one country. Rail de Musique and Bienvenue Chez Moi , which were released as a single alongside the six chart songs, did not make it into the charts.
