The NRJ Group is the largest private radio company in Europe . The founder and main shareholder is Jean-Paul Baudecroux . NRJ is the abbreviation of the French name Nouvelle Radio Jeunesse , which translates as "New Youth Radio ". The correct pronunciation of the acronym "en-er-schi" results in the French word énergie [ ɛnɛʀˈʒi ] ( German energy ). Outside the French-speaking area, the company adds the English name ENERGY [ ˈɛnɛʀdʒi ] to its logo and also uses it in the pronunciation of the names of the corresponding radio stations.
In addition to the umbrella brand NRJ, the listed NRJ Group is on the air with up to three other radio brands, depending on the market: Chérie FM, Rire & Chansons and Nostalgie.
The NRJ Group is now present in 17 countries.
history
1981: NRJ is launched and grows in French-speaking countries
In 1981, the first radio station called NRJ went on air in the French capital Paris . Six years later, in 1987, the NRJ Group expanded its activities in France with Chérie FM , followed by first stations outside France in 1988 in Belgium and Switzerland. With the Chanson transmitter Rire et Chansons the Group in 1990 established another channel in France. In 2001, Radio Monte Carlo and the radio chain Nostalgie (including locations in Senegal , Lebanon and Togo ) were acquired by the NRJ Group, but Radio Monte Carlo itself was sold a short time later. Since then, the four brands NRJ, Chérie FM, Rire et Chansons and Nostalgie have been part of the company's portfolio. In addition, the NRJ Group operates stations in the French overseas departments and regions of Réunion , Mayotte , Guadeloupe , Guyane , Martinique as well as Tahiti and New Caledonia and, since 1988, in French-speaking Switzerland around Lake Geneva, independent radio programs that are also broadcast in French.
1991: ENERGY enters the German-speaking area
Germany
When Energy Berlin started broadcasting in 1991, the NRJ Group went on air for the first time in the Berlin metropolitan area and for the first time in Germany . Since then, further stations have followed in Saxony ( Energy Sachsen in Leipzig , Chemnitz and Dresden since 1993 and Zwickau since 1995), Munich ( Energy Munich since 1994), Hamburg ( Energy Hamburg since 1995), Rhineland-Palatinate ( Energy Rheinland-Pfalz since 1996, Reinstated in 1997), Nuremberg ( Energy Nürnberg also since 1995), the Stuttgart region ( Energy Stuttgart since 2001 by taking over RMB-Radio and in 2006 by buying R.TV Radio), Bremen ( Energy Bremen since 2003) and in the Rhine Main area ( Energy Rhein-Main since 2010 by taking over the Main FM station , discontinued in 2013). From August 2011, the nationwide distribution of the digital radio station Energy DAB +, which has meanwhile been marketed as Energy Digital and is now called "ENERGY Hit Music Only!" ENERGY Media GmbH has been marketing all of the energy stations in Germany that are majority-owned by the NRJ Group (with the exception of Energy Bremen and Energy Sachsen).
Austria
In Austria , Energy 104.2 went on air in 1998 in the Austrian capital Vienna . Ten years later, in 2008, the NRJ-Group's second station in the republic followed with Energy 99.9 in Innsbruck and the third in 2009 with Energy 94.0 in Salzburg . The three stations are managed by N&C Privatradio Betriebs GmbH. In addition to these three stations, Radio Graz and Radio Eins have also been part of the NRJ Group since 2010. The 2011 relaunch as Energy Steiermark was planned for the latter two radio stations, but this was rejected by KommAustria after its competitor KroneHit reported violations of the licenses . From 2013, Energy improved reception in the greater Vienna and Innsbruck area: New frequencies from Energy Innsbruck: Innsbruck-Telfs-Seefeld 107.7 MHz (transmitter in Inzing) and Hall-Jenbach 93.6 MHz (transmitter in Wattens). In the greater Vienna area, Energy improved reception north-east of Vienna: transmitter Mistelbach 90.5 MHz, transmitter Hornsburg 91.1 MHz. At the end of May 2019, the nationwide broadcast of the station Energy Wien via DAB + began.
Switzerland
With a share purchase of 49 percent in Hit Radio Z in Zurich in 2003, a German-language radio program of the NRJ Group was created for the first time in Switzerland under the name Energy Zurich . NRJ Léman in the Geneva area has existed in French-speaking Switzerland since 1988 ( Léman is the French name for Lake Geneva ), which is broadcast with a French broadcast license. Seven years after the start of the station in Zurich, Energy Bern, the second German-language broadcaster, went on air. On January 13, 2012, Energy Basel, the fourth station in Switzerland, went on air.
1993: NRJ / ENERGY goes international
In 1993, an NRJ station also started operating in Sweden . In 1995 Energy Sweden received another 14 new frequencies. With the start of the Energy Helsinki program , operations in neighboring Finland began (there Energy Finland received seven additional frequencies in 1999). In 1998 the program started in Oslo, followed by a station in Norway and in 2000 in Denmark . In the same year, NRJ also received additional frequencies in Norway.
Eastern Europe, Middle East and Canada
In 2006 further stations followed with Energy Bulgaria , Energy Ukraine , Energy Lebanon and Energy Russia . This means that the NRJ Group can also be received on the Asian continent for the first time . Energy Ukraine was broadcast in Kiev from April 27, 2006 and in Sevastopol from June of the same year . At the end of December 2011 / beginning of January 2012, the station ceased broadcasting in Ukraine and the frequencies were transferred to Radio 24 .
Since the renaming of the previous energy stations in the province of Québec , radio stations have also been operated in Canada under the name NRJ since 2009 .
In 2011 Radio Nostalgia was also broadcast in the Helsinki area as well as in Lisbon and Porto, Portugal .
Greece and Luxembourg
In addition, on October 9, 2011 the stations Fresh Radio in Athens and Oasis Radio in Thessaloniki, which belong to the Greek Modern Times Group , which already operates energy stations in Sweden, were also converted into energy stations through another franchise cooperation. The station in Thessaloniki, Greece, was stopped again in April 2012, around six months after it started broadcasting. Negotiations are currently underway in Luxembourg with the Saint-Paul media group about relaunching the radio station Den Neien Radio under the NRJ or Nostalgie brand.
In addition to local and national radio stations, the NRJ Group has been operating web radios of various genres since 2006 . NRJ Group shares have been traded on the French stock exchange since 1989. With over 400 frequencies, the NRJ / ENERGY brand alone is Europe's largest radio brand.
2005: NRJ Group discovers further business areas
In addition to the NRJ and Energy radio programs, the NRJ Group has been operating the TV channel NRJ 12 since March 31, 2005 and the clip TV channel NRJ Hits in France since March 22, 2007 , both channels were initially also available in other countries via Hotbird (NRJ 12) or Astra (NRJ Hits). The NRJ Group's youngest television station is NRJ Paris , which was founded on March 20, 2008. The regional broadcaster 7L TV was also part of the group.
Furthermore, in November 2005, NRJ Mobile was founded in France in cooperation with the French mobile operator SFR , its own virtual cellular service. New contracts are now being offered in cooperation with Orange . In the meantime, there is also a virtual mobile operator in Belgium of the same name, which was founded in cooperation with Transatel .
NRJ Events has been an in-house event agency since 2003 .
Corporate strategies
expansion
Both in German-speaking and internationally, the NRJ Group relies on a three-pillar strategy, which includes the takeover of existing radio stations (e.g. Main FM, Hit Radio Z etc.), the establishment of new radio stations (e.g. when applying for radio frequencies in Rhineland-Palatinate) and finally the franchise principle (e.g. Energy Bremen, Energy Lebanon, NRJ Canada etc.). Since 2011, the NRJ Group has been increasingly pursuing the expansion of the Nostalgie brand according to the same concept.
Portfolio
In 2005, the French NRJ Group decided on a strategy to further develop the company and its portfolio. The five pillars of the future are radio, television, internet, event management and mobile communications, which in turn will be networked with one another in order to establish NRJ as a multimedia brand.
Cooperations
National
broadcasts
All Energy stations (with the exception of Energy Bremen with ENERGY Bremen Moin!, Energy Sachsen with Knallwach - with Franzi and Julian in the morning and Energy Wien with Energy in the morning ) have been broadcasting their morning program under the uniform title Toastshow since 2009. In 2006 there was a first attempt to broadcast a nationwide format, always broadcast from different cities, under the title ENERGY Morning Live (also with the exception of the stations in Bremen and Saxony). In addition, similar or the same titles as ENERGY @ Work or ENERGY am Afternoon and ENERGY Interaktiv or ENERGY Drivetime are used for the morning and afternoon programs .
The ENERGY Brandneu format also takes up this regionalized principle of program design. Various moderators provide information on current and new songs at the individual energy stations. In addition, the listeners have the opportunity to vote for their favorites from five given songs on the German Energy Stations website and thus help shape the program.
The so-called ENERGY Music Shows , i.e. ENERGY Mastermix , ENERGY Dance and ENERGY Rock , are currently broadcast on various stations from Friday to Sunday from 10:00 p.m. In the past, the program ENERGY Mastermix was broadcast on Saturdays from 9:00 p.m. in Berlin, Munich and in Nuremberg on Fridays from 11:00 p.m. Initially compiled as a format with different DJs from the genres Mash, House, R&B, Hip-Hop and Black, the show is now regularly put on by Milk & Sugar . In addition, Energy is also releasing corresponding CDs under this title in Germany, some of which are also compiled by various DJs such as Paul van Dyk or Benny Benassi .
The band discs incident of the energy stations in the Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg, Nuremberg, Rhein-Main and Munich region is a radio broadcast that alternates between German and international individual singers, but also bands (e.g. We are heroes , Die Ärzte , Eliza Doolittle or Die Fantastischen Vier ) is moderated. In this program, the artists present their personal musical tastes as well as their favorite songs.
The ENERGY Web Report (previously Carola Trend Report ) was another program cooperation between the stations in Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart region, Berlin and Hamburg and ran there between 10:00 and 19:00, always after the news. The program was initially moderated by Carola Jung , chief presenter between 2004 and 2008 and program director at Energy Berlin between 2005 and 2008, but renamed it after moving to Energy Sachsen in 2009 and discontinued it a short time later.
Another joint cooperation between the stations in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg, the Stuttgart region and Saxony was the nationwide radio talk show 911 - your talk show on ENERGY (nine eleven). According to the name, this was from Monday to Thursday between 21 : 00 and 23:00. During the talk show, the listeners were able to participate in the program by phone, chat or e-mail, to express their opinion on certain topics and to discuss them. The show's mascots were naked mole rats . The show was canceled at short notice by all energy stations after the broadcast on October 14, 2009. According to an open letter from the station bosses, the reason for this was the mostly crude language in the program.
On October 7, 2010, Energy announced that the radio show The Tommy Wosch Show will go on air from November 2010 . The program should be broadcast on all German energy stations, making it the first daily nationwide “ infotainment show” in Germany. The moderators are Tommy Wosch and Kathrin Thüring . On November 1st the name of the show was changed to Wosch. The ENERGY evening show. changed. The two-hour program is broadcast from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and repeated between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. The program runs on Energy Rhein-Main between 10 p.m. and midnight. The show first aired on November 22nd. Tommy Wosch has been moderating alone or with Michi Balzer since mid-July 2011 after Kathrin Thüring returned to the radio station Fritz . On June 29, 2012, the program was finally stopped for private reasons.
Events
Introduced as ENERGY Live Bashes , the ENERGY Live Sessions present live concerts by popular artists such as Rihanna , Mando Diao , Silbermond or Duffy in a private and “somewhat different location”. The venues for the nationwide broadcasts also change. Selected concerts are recorded on the basis of a corporate cooperation with the television broadcaster RTL II and broadcast in its program. The energy stations in Basel, Bern and Zurich also broadcast their own ENERGY Live sessions .
International
Not only nationally, but also internationally, the NRJ Group uses synergy effects for various events, programming or other promotions and thus consolidates its image as an international brand.
broadcasts
The Euro Hot 30 are compiled on a weekly basis. They are determined from the individual playlists of the NRJ stations in Germany (except Energy Bremen and Energy Sachsen), France, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Lebanon and Greece (until 2010 the Bulgarian Energy Stations involved). As a result of the determination from the individual playlists of the stations, it may happen that individual songs are played that alternatively are not or only rarely played in the program of the corresponding station. The Russian energy stations broadcast a similar program under the title NRJ Hot 30 , which is determined from the most played songs of all Russian energy stations.
In addition, cross-national logos or titles are used for individual programs, products (such as CDs and the like), events, etc. such as the NRJ Master Mix or Le 6/9 . In addition, since June 2011, the same or similar jingles and music beds have been used on largely all NRJ stations worldwide, for example in Germany, France, Russia and Scandinavia.
Events
In the field of event design, the titles and logos of the open-air concert series NRJ In The Park (Germany [Berlin and Munich] and Belgium; previously also in Austria, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany [Stuttgart]) and those of In -Door concert series NRJ Music Tour (currently in Germany, France, Belgium, Lebanon; previously also in Norway, Léman; in Switzerland since 2003 under the title ENERGY Stars For Free ), although these sometimes differ greatly from the Different design. Stars appearing in the past have included Sophie Ellis-Bextor , Natasha Bedingfield , the Black Eyed Peas , Craig David , Jason Derulo , Fergie , Jennifer Lopez , MIA. , Silbermond , the Sugababes , Xavier Naidoo and the Sons of Mannheim , Atomic Kitten , Taio Cruz or Madcon . The event in Berlin, which regularly takes place on a floating stage in Berlin's Strandbad Wannsee , is also Germany's largest free radio open air with up to 30,000 visitors. In 2011, in the nine-year history of NRJ In The Park, the Berlin event was canceled shortly before the start due to a storm warning from the German Weather Service , which expected wind strengths up to force 8.
The prestigious NRJ Music Awards , which have been held annually in Cannes since 1999 and above all attract attention with their international star line-up, similar to the MTV Europe Music Awards , are also considered a showcase . The NRJ Music Awards are broadcast annually on French television by the market leader TF1 , reaching over six million viewers. In addition, the NRJ Radio Awards are held in the Scandinavian region and, since 2004, the NRJ Ciné Awards and NRJ Movie Awards . The NRJ Fashion Awards took place for the first time on November 1, 2007 . On November 7, 2012, the NRJ broadcasters in France and Belgium will present the NRJ DJ Awards for the first time .
In 2010, the ENERGY Fashion Night took place in Zurich for the first time . The show has also been taking place in Berlin since October 21, 2011. The show presents a mix of well-known music stars such as Duran Duran , Glasperlenspiel , Hurts or Frida Gold and the presentation of current fashion collections by models.
