Sainsk ( Russian Заинск ; Tatar Зәй Zəy ) is a city in the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ) with 41,803 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 290 km east of the republic capital Kazan near the union of the rivers Stepnoi Sai ( Steppen- Sai , dammed here to a small dam) and Lesnoi Sai ( Forest-Sai ) to the Sai , a left tributary of the Kama .
Sainsk is administratively directly subordinate to the republic and at the same time the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
The city is located on the Akbasch (near Bugulma ) - Naberezhnye Chelny - Agrys railway line, which was opened in 1956 .
history
Zainsk originated 1652-1656 as border fortifications of Czardom Russia in the course of so-called Kamalinie ( Sakamskaja tscherta ) disposed between the Volga and mouth of Ik proceeded in the Kama. The name is derived from the Sai River , which in ancient Tatar simply means river .
With the construction of the Sainsk thermal power plant from 1956, the workers' settlement Nowy Sai ( New Sai , after the river) was created, which received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1962 , was united with the old town of Sainsk on April 5, 1978 and under this name the town charter got awarded.

Culture and sights
The remains of the old wooden fortress from 1652 are earth walls, as well as some buildings from old Sainsk, such as the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross ( Крестовоздвиженская церковь Krestovosdwischenskaja Zerkow ) from 1826.
The city has had a local museum since 1985.
economy
In addition to the thermal power station (2400 MW, Tatenergo ), there are vehicle construction companies in Sainsk (suppliers for KAMAZ in Naberezhnye Chelny, 50 km north), the construction industry (reinforced concrete and metal structures), the food industry ( sugar factory ) and the timber industry.
