Laischewo ( Russian Лаишево ; Tatar Лаеш Layış ) is a small town in the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ) with 7735 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 60 km southeast of the republic capital Kazan on the right bank of the Kama , which together with the Volga , into which it flows not far, forms the Kuibyshev reservoir .

Laischewo is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

history

The place was founded in 1557 and received city ​​rights as Laischew in 1781 as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the governorship , from 1796 of the Kazan governorate .

In 1926 the place lost its town charter and was now called Laischewo . In 1950, however, it was again given the status of an urban-type settlement and on September 9, 2004, renewed town charter.

Culture and sights

A number of buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in Laischewo. These include the Trinity Cathedral ( Троицкий собор / Troitski sobor) of the former women's monastery from 1888 to 1912, the St. Sophia Cathedral ( Софийский собор / Sofijski sobor; 1767, rebuilt in 1850), the poor school (late 19th century from 1864) and the high school.

There has been an agricultural school since 1910. In 1997 a local museum was opened.

A number of old village churches have been preserved in the surrounding villages, for example in Derschavino (1715, rebuilt 1874), Yegorjewo (1769), Russkoye Nikolskoye (1848), Sokury (1895) and Smoldejarowo (1905), as well as a mosque from 1908 in the village of Kirbi .

The area is connected with the youth of the important poet Gawriil Derschawin (1743-1816), whose family owned extensive estates here and whose parents are buried in the cemetery of Yegorjewo.

economy

Laischewo is the center of an agricultural area. In the last few years attempts have been made to build up a tourist infrastructure as a regional recreation area in the industry-free area on the banks of the Wolgastau reservoir.
