Main entrance to the clinic

The Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch is a clinic on Schwanebecker Chaussee in the Buch part of the Berlin district of Pankow . The hospital was built on the site of the sanatoriums in Berlin-Buch , which were built between 1898 and 1930. The new clinic was built at the instigation of the operator, the Helios Group .

history

On June 1, 2001, the former Buch municipal clinic as well as the Robert-Rössle-Klinik and the Franz-Volhard-Klinik were sold to Helios. The Buch clinic was in deficit and Helios made an offer for the takeover to build a new building for 200 million euros by 2008. In return, the State of Berlin paid Helios over 18 million euros for an agreed "job security" scheme. After privatization, around 1,000 jobs were cut, wages were cut and work was concentrated.

On June 23, 2004, construction work began on the new building for the clinic, which was designed by HDR TMK Planungsgesellschaft . After the completion of the new building and completely new equipment, the clinic was reopened in mid-July 2007 and has since offered around one thousand beds. With the Robert Rössle Clinic and the Franz Volhard Clinic, the clinic has two research clinics for oncology and cardiology , which were part of the Central Institute for Cancer Research and the Central Institute for Cardiovascular Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR until 1990 and initially after 1990 were affiliated to the Charité . Most of the historical buildings on the grounds of the clinic have been preserved, the new operator has completely renovated them and housed individual business areas such as the laboratory, a polyclinic or the IT department.

areas of expertise

More than 60 specialist departments in interdisciplinary centers such as the Breast Center, the Intestinal Center, the Perinatal Center, the Stroke Unit and the Chest Pain Unit provide the basis for targeted medical care. An important point is the emergency center with a heliport. All 60 departments, subdivided into 50 stations, are listed precisely on the clinic homepage.

So far, an average of 52,000 inpatient and 140,000 outpatient treatments have been carried out per year (as of May 2020.)

The German Cancer Society has certified the clinic's oncological center several times, most recently in 2018 for 15 internal departments.

Equipment and special features

The clinic has the most modern medical technology, including three magnetic resonance tomographs , three computer tomographs , a digital mammography device and numerous X-ray systems. The Clinic for Nuclear Medicine works with a PET / CT .

In 2011, the smallest baby in Berlin survived at the Helios Clinic in Berlin-Buch. It was born in the 24th week weighing 400 grams, although the small intestine was perforated after the birth .

Building description

The new building is a compact system oriented north-south. It has several building arms, each of which is assigned to a specialist facility. Examination units such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography are located on the ground floor. In the foyer there is central information for visitors, a cafeteria, a pharmacy, a hairdresser and small sales units. A waiting area is provided for relatives accompanying the parturient or waiting for treatment to be completed.

A Ronald McDonald oasis is also located on the ground floor and is reserved for small children accompanying them. Here you will find peace and quiet and distraction from stressful treatments in a pleasant environment.

On the first floor there is a Catholic and a Protestant pastoral care facility as well as a room of silence.

All wings of the transverse building mutually form a sunken garden in the basement area, which can be accessed from one narrow side.

The rescue center has its own driveway and is internally connected to the nave.

In the spacious park with numerous old trees, three works of art stand out. On the one hand, there is an oversized hard plastic pillow on a lawn that bears the first names of children all around. Maybe it's designed for a photo with a newborn baby. On the other hand, there is an abstract figure between the nave and a historical building, created by Achim Kühn . It could be an allusion to satellite orbit or a simple atomic model. And in front of the main entrance there is a buddy bear who shows everyday life in the clinic in short picture stories from the approach of an ambulance, operations, care and a view of the city. According to the inscription on the animal's hind paws, Klio Karadim created the painting in June 2016.

Billing and hygiene problems from 2008 to 2013

In June 2011, the police searched the Helios Clinic in Buch and the Helios headquarters in Berlin-Mitte because of possible billing fraud. 14 suspects, including doctors, chief physicians and other employees, were suspected that outpatient services were being provided by unapproved and, in some cases, insufficiently qualified doctors. These were then billed to the respective licensed doctor, since 2018. According to a report in the Berliner Zeitung on February 13, 2013, Helios made a payment of € 6 million to KV to end the civil case. According to this report, the prosecutor continued to investigate. In the course of the action, the police searched nine apartments in Berlin and Brandenburg. The investigations have been concluded, the consequences not known.

Problems with hygiene compliance in 2016

A program, Profit instead of Health, from the Team Wallraff - Reporter undercover series, shown on January 11, 2016, accused the clinic of disregarding hygiene regulations. Service staff who distributed the food also cleaned the beds, which could allow fecal bacteria to get into the food. Other allegations concerned negligent hand washing, bed transport without protective clothing and improper handling of patients with multi-resistant germs . The clinic announced improvements in hygiene training, but was unjustly pilloried overall. The proportion of infections with multi-resistant germs is lower than the national average.

With the creation of its own hygiene officer and the publication of the annual test results, the clinic management redirected its work in this important area.
