Wassiljewo ( Russian and Tatar Васи́льево ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Tatarstan ( Russia ) with 16,953 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is a good 25 kilometers as the crow flies west of the center of the republic capital Kazan on the left bank of the Volga , at the upper end of the reservoir area of the Kuibyshev reservoir . The place is located on an island that is formed by the narrow tributary Karassicha , which today, however, is largely silted up or swampy .

Wassiljewo belongs to the Zelenodolsk Raion and is located about 10 kilometers east of its administrative center Zelenodolsk .

Culture and sights

Near the right bank of the Volga opposite Vasilyevo and accessible from there by ship in summer is the former city ​​of Svyashsk , founded in 1551 under Ivan IV during the last war against the Kazan Khanate as a base for the decisive attack . In today's village (since 1932) a large number of buildings from the 16th to the early 20th century have been preserved. The place, one of the most important tourist destinations in Tatarstan, has been a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998 .

A few kilometers north of Vasilyevo extends the 5921  hectare northern sector of the biosphere reserve established in 1960 and Sapovedniks Volga-Kama . The Russian Orthodox Raifa Mother of God Nativity Monastery ( Раифский Богородицкий монастырь / Raifski-monastyror ) , which was founded in the 17th century, closed in the 1930s and reopened in 1991, is located on its territory on Lake Raifa. , the most important monastery of the Kazan and Tatarstan eparchy .

In the pine forests on the Volga near Wassiljewo there are several sanatoriums , for example Vasilyevsky and Sosnovy Bor , as well as a hotel and training complex of the UNICS Kazan basketball club .

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a glassworks and forestry businesses in Vasilyevo.

The settlement is situated on the railway line Moscow  - Kazan - Yekaterinburg (station at kilometer 768 and multiple breakpoints ). There are suburban trains to Kazan. To the north, the old route of the M7 trunk road from Moscow via Kazan to Ufa leads past the place, in the course of which the Volga is crossed by a car ferry at Zelenodolsk . The new route crosses the river on a bridge a good ten kilometers below (east) of Wassiljewo.
