Zelenodolsk ( Russian Зеленодольск ; Tatar Яшел Үзән Yäşel Üzän ) is a city in Russia in the Republic of Tatarstan . It is located on the northern bank of the Volga , 38 km west of the republic capital Kazan , and has 97,674 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
history
Zelenodolsk was founded on the territory of the Cheremiss village of Parat . In 1865 this place was mentioned under the name Kabachishchi . Since 1897 the village was called Paratski Saton (Paratsk) . From 1928 the settlement was called Seljony Dol (Зелёный Дол), from which the current name developed, which the place received in 1932 at the same time as it was granted city rights.

economy
Wood processing, furniture manufacturing and the clothing industry are important for the city. It has been an important shipbuilding site here since 1895. There are several climatic health resorts in the vicinity of Zelenodolsk , and agriculture also plays an important role.
education
Zelenodolsk has a branch of the Kazan State University as well as a technical college for mechanical engineering and a medical vocational school, several private academic educational institutions and a vocational school for shipbuilding.
The city has 24 general education schools, the majority of which are called Gymnasium or Lyceum .
Culture
21 km away from Zelenodolsk there is a Mother of God monastery . The city itself has three cultural centers with large auditoriums. These are equipped with stages and orchestra pits. There is also a cultural facility for young people in the Mirny district , which houses several dance and theater groups.
The city also has a youth sports school, youth art school and a music school. There are also several libraries (of the two cultural centers, the city administration and several district libraries) available to the population.
There is a museum of local history and ethnography in the city. You can also visit the Gorky Ship Factory Museum. Secondary school number 3 has a cosmonautics museum. In the museum there are numerous copies of the aircraft, as well as parts of the cosmonaut equipment.
Not far from the city, located on a Volga island, the Svyashsk Monastery can be visited, the buildings of which are important testimonies of Russian architecture.
