geography
The city is located in the Volga region about 60 kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of the republic capital Kazan on the Kazanka River (Tatar Qazansu), which flows into the Volga in Kazan .
Arsk is the administrative center of the Arsk Raion of the same name .

history
Arsk was founded in the 13th, possibly in the 10th century at the latest, and was an important fortress of the Volga-Bulgarian Empire and later of the Kazan Khanate with earthen walls and stone walls. During the Moscow-Kazan Wars , the city was burned down by Russian troops in 1552.
After the defeat of Kazan and the annexation to Tsarist Russia , Arsk became a fortress again in 1606. In 1781 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a Ujesds of the Kazan Governorate . However, the Ujesd was soon dissolved and divided between the neighboring Ujesden Kazan and Mamadysch . Arsk sank into insignificance as an "administration-free city" ("saschtatny gorod").
In 1926 Arsk lost its town charter and was henceforth a village. Thanks to the continuous opening of the Moscow – Kazan – Yekaterinburg railway line through Arsk in 1924, however, economic importance and population grew again in the following period.
In 1938 the status of an urban-type settlement was given, and on June 27, 2008 it was given town charter again.
