Povolschye
Povolschje or Volga region ( Russian Поволжье ; literally: on the Volga) is a Russian landscape that extends along or near the middle and lower Volga and is economically oriented towards the Volga.

Geographically, areas of the upper Volga are sometimes also included in the Powolschje, which lie between the Volga springs and the mouth of the Oka into the Volga.
history
In historical terms, one differentiates between the following four regions of the Powolschje:
- Lower Povolschye region
- Middle Povolschye region
- Pokamje region
- Bashkortostan
The Volga region was shaped by Islam for a long time . The Islamic states that had their center here included the Volga Bulgarian Empire (10th – 13th centuries), the Kazan Khanate and the Astrakhan Khanate (both 15th –16th centuries). One of the first Islamic scholars from the Volga region to make original contributions to Islamic literature ( Fiqh , Kalām , ʿAqīda ) was Abū n-Nasr al-Qūrsāwī (1776–1812), already a controversial figure in his day.
Regions
The region Lower Volga region include Saratov , Volgograd Oblast , Astrakhan Oblast and the Autonomous Republic of Kalmykia .
The region Middle Volga region includes the Autonomous Republic of Tatarstan , the Ulyanovsk Oblast , the Oblast Penza and Samara Oblast .
