List of cities in Russia |
Leninogorsk ( Russian Лениного́рск ) is a city in Russia in the Republic of Tatarstan . It has 64,127 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located 322 km southeast of the republic capital Kazan .
history
Leninogorsk emerged in the 1940s from a village called Novaya Pismyanka , which had existed as early as the 19th century and, since February 10, 1935, the administrative seat of Novo-Pismjanski Rajon. In 1948 an oil field was developed near the village and a workers' settlement was established for this purpose. Together with the village, the settlement grew so rapidly that it was given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1951 and town charter on August 18, 1955. The newly chosen city name has no historical reference to the original location and, like many other places in the former Soviet Union, was given in honor of the revolutionary leader Lenin . The Rajon was also renamed accordingly.
