Energy Wien is a classic format radio in the contemporary hit radio format, CHR for short. According to the format, the focus of the music program is on current chart music, specializing in hot pop, RnB and house. The station's current slogan is "Hit Music Only". According to the station's own assessment, the main target group is a “dynamic, mobile urban audience between 25 and 39 years of age”.

History and holdings

The radio station started broadcasting on April 1, 1998, matching the frequency at 10:42 am as Energy 104.2. On this day - when the largest liberalization to date on the Austrian radio market came into force - more than a dozen private broadcasters went on air for the first time across Austria, including four in Vienna.

In 1999 the media authority in Vienna filed a complaint against the broadcaster because its ownership structure did not comply with Austrian private radio law. The Axel Springer Verlag was 37% involved - by law, newspaper companies must maintain only 26% stake in private radio stations. In October 2000, Springer-Verlag gave up a large part of its stake in the station, and in 2003 it finally withdrew from the station entirely. The European NRJ Group, which was previously the majority owner, took over the Springer shares. The group has held the majority in the station since 2002, when the Munich-based film dealer Herbert Kloiber , who also has a significant stake in the private television broadcaster ATV , sold its shares.

In 2015 Dori Bauer won the Austrian Radio Prize as best presenter.
