Akhtubinsk ( Russian Ахтубинск ) is a city in the north of Russia's Astrakhan oblast . It has 41,853 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is 270 km northwest of Astrakhan on the left bank of the Akhtuba , an estuary of the Volga . The city is only 30 km from the Kazakh border and 50 km from the famous Salt Lake Baskunchak removed.
Akhtubinsk has an important base for the Russian Air Force and a test pilot school.

The city Akhtubinsk was in 1959 from the settlements Vladimirovka (Russian Владимировка ) Petropawlowskoje ( Петропавловское ) and Akhtuba ( Ахтуба formed).
