Verkhny Baskuntschak ( Russian Ве́рхний Баскунча́к ) is an urban-type settlement in the Astrakhan Oblast ( Russia ) with 8411 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement lies on the northern edge of the Caspian basin about 230 km as the crow NNW of Oblastverwaltungszentrums Astrakhan , east of the Volga River and about 10 km west of Salt Lake Baskunchak .

Verkhny Baskuntschak belongs to Akhtubinsk Raion and is about 40 km to the east from its administrative center Akhtubinsk .

history

Verkhny Baskuntschak was built in the first decade of the 20th century after the Baskuntschak Railway from Lake Baskuntschak to the salt loading points on the Volga arm Akhtuba , which opened in 1884, crossed the Saratov  - Astrakhan railway on the Ryazan-Uralsk Railway from 1907 and opened a station there. The place name means 'Upper Baskuntschak' in contrast to the Nizhny Baskuntschak ( 'Nieder-' or 'Unter-Baskuntschak' ), which is about 50 meters lower in the baskuntschak lake .

The role of the railway station grew after the Baskuntschak Railway became part of the Ryazan-Uralsk Railway, which was nationalized in 1918, and especially after the extension of the former Baskuntschak Railway to Stalingrad (now Volgograd ) in the early 1930s, creating a continuous rail link along the Lower Volga was created. In this context, the facilities of the station with the locomotive depot and associated workshops were significantly expanded, and the population of the place grew. In 1936 it received urban-type settlement status.

During the German-Soviet War , the station was an important hub for supplying the Red Army in the Battle of Stalingrad . For this reason, the station and settlement were bombed several times by the German air force and severely destroyed.

Economy and Infrastructure

Verkhny Baskuntschak is characterized by rail transport facilities (locomotive depot, workshops) and the logistics associated with salt mining in Lake Baskuntschak. This is where the railway lines from Saratov and Volgograd to Astrakhan and Kazakhstan (towards Atyrau ), operated by the Privolschskaja schelesnaja doroga ("Volga Railway") of the RŽD , meet. A branch line for the transport of salt leads to Nizhny Baskuntschak.

The settlement is on the road that runs from Akhtubinsk on the regional road from Volgograd to Astrakhan along the railway line to Lake Baskuntschak near Nizhny Baskuntschak.
