history

The emergence of today's route network of the Volga Railway began with the commissioning of the railway from Saratov to Atkarsk in July 1871, which was financed and operated by the newly founded joint-stock company of the Ryazan-Ural Railway ( Рязано-Уральская железная дорога ). At the end of the 19th century, this railway company was already one of the largest in the Russian Empire and had routes in a total of twelve governorates in the European part of Russia, which, among other things, connected Moscow with Astrakhan.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the company was nationalized and in 1930 it was divided between the Moscow-Kursk ( Московско-Курская железная дорога ) and Moscow-Kazan ( Московско-Казанская жалезная железр . In the 1930s, the route network in the Lower Volga was expanded particularly intensively, so that the volume of traffic there at the beginning of the 1940s exceeded the corresponding figure of 1913 by four times. In the years of the Second World War , the Volga Railway was of great strategic importance for the Red Army, especially during the Battle of Stalingrad .

In 1953 the Volga Railway was formed in its current structure through a merger of the former Ryazan-Ural Railway with the Stalingrad Regional Directorate. Since 2003 the Volga Railway has had the status of a branch of the joint stock company RŽD.
