Jenotajewka ( Russian Енотаевка ; 1785-1925 Jenotajewsk , Russian Енотаевск after old orthography Енотаевскъ) is a village (selo) in the Astrakhan oblast in Russia . It is the administrative seat of the Yenotayevka Rajons and has 7616 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
location
The place is 154 km northwest of the regional capital Astrakhan above the right high bank of the Volga on the river Yenotayevka . In addition to the Selo Jenotajewka, the settlement Gospitomnika (Госпитомника; 2006: 17 inhabitants) belongs to the local area.
history
Jenotajewka was founded in 1741 at the behest of Tsarina Elizabeth by the newly appointed governor of Astrakhan Vasily Tatishchev as a center for trade with the neighboring steppe peoples and as a fortress to protect the Astrakhan- Moscow postal route . In 1785 the settlement, renamed Jenotajewsk , received city rights and became the administrative center of its own Ujesd . In the course of the municipal reorganization of 1925, Yenotayevsk lost its city status again.
The etymology of the place name is not yet clear. It is derived either from the personal name Jenotai or from the combination of the Turkish language yan (side) and tau (mountain), which could refer to the elevated position of the place above the Volga-Akhtuba lowlands ; In any case, the "Berg Jenotai" appears as early as 1703 in the travelogues of the Dutch engraver Cornelis de Bruijn .
