Narimanow ( Russian Нариманов ) is a city in the Astrakhan Oblast ( Russia ) with 11,521 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the Caspian Depression about 50 km northwest of the oblast capital Astrakhan on the right bank of the Volga .

Narimanow is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The city is located on the Volgograd –Astrakhan road.

history

The village of Nizhnevolschskoje was created in connection with the construction of a barrage through the main arm of the Volga with a bypass canal and locks about two kilometers upstream. The place received in 1967 as Nizhnevolschsk the status of an urban-type settlement (from Russian Nizhnyaya Volga for Lower Volga ); the construction of the barrage was completed in 1976.

From 1979 a large shipyard was built below the place, and on October 19, 1984 the place was given city rights under its current name, after the Azerbaijani writer and communist politician Nəriman Nərimanov (Russian Narimanow , 1870-1925).

economy

The town-building company is the Lotos shipyard , which u. a. Manufactures drilling platforms . There is an oil terminal on the Volga , as well as construction and light industries.
