history
The present city was built from 1951; its name is based directly on the Volga (Wolschski = literally "Volga place"). Before the 1950s, the village of Besrodnoye existed on the site of Wolschski ; here there was since the 1720s, and until the 19th century, a government silk factory at the initiative of Tsar Peter I had been established.
The reason for the city's foundation in 1951 was the construction of the Volgograd hydropower plant . Wolschski was originally built as a residential area for the workers who were involved in the construction of the dam. Wolschski received city status on July 22, 1954; at that time its population was around 30,000. Wolschski was able to exceed the limit of 100,000 inhabitants as early as the mid-1960s.
