Frolowo ( Russian Фролово ) is a Russian city ​​with 39,449 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Volgograd Oblast , Southern Federal District . It has the status of an urban district and is also the administrative center of the raion of the same name in the Volgograd Oblast.

Frolowo lies in the middle of the southern Russian steppe landscape on the Artscheda River from the Don river system . The climate in and around Frolowo is dry and highly continental with a strong temperature gradient between the summer and winter months (up to 40 ° C or below −35 ° C).

The oblast capital Volgograd is located 148 kilometers southeast of Frolowo. The nearest town is Mikhailovka 44 km northwest.

history

The place was known since 1859 as a village inhabited by Cossacks called Chutor Frolowski (Хутор Фроловский) and had around 250 inhabitants at that time. During the construction of the railway line Grjasi - Poworino - Tsaritsyn in the 1870s, a railway settlement under the name Lyschinski (Лыжинский) was built at the railway station, which was named after the river Artscheda and still bears this name today.

In 1928 the Frolowo Rajon was formed, the center of which was Lyschinsky. In 1936 the place received city rights and its current name. During the Second World War, Frolowo suffered badly from air raids by the Wehrmacht from July 1942 to January 1943 , which were primarily aimed at the city's railway infrastructure in order to cut supply routes for the Red Army in the Battle of Stalingrad .

The two prisoner of war camps 50 and 163 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War were located in the city . Camp 50 was opened shortly after the Battle of Stalingrad. Both camps were later taken over by the Stalingrad prisoner-of-war camps.

Economy and Transport

Frolowo railway station

Frolowo owns a steel mill and plants for the production of household chemicals, as well as a dairy plant, food combines and a grain silo. Agriculture plays an important role in the area, including the cultivation of potatoes and vegetables and the keeping of pigs, sheep, goats, poultry and beekeeping.

The city is located on the R22 trunk road on the section between Mikhailovka and Volgograd. The line belonging to the Volga Railway runs parallel , on which Frolowo has a station with two locomotive sheds.

Education and culture

There is a business school in Frolowo.

Worth seeing is a historic house of the merchant Dejew from the 19th century, which has been preserved in the city center.
