location
Kalatsch am Don is about 85 kilometers west of the regional capital, Volgograd . The nearest town, Surowikino, is around 50 km away. Along with Volgodonsk, Kalatsch am Don is one of the two port cities on the Zimlyansk reservoir on the lower Don and is located about nine kilometers upstream from the junction of the reservoir into the Volga-Don Canal .
history
The place originated in 1708 as a small Cossack settlement called Kalachevsky . The place name Kalatsch is synonymous in Russian with "river loop", as the river bed of the Don made a sharp curve in this area until it was dammed. In 1863 Kalatsch was connected to the Russian railway network with the construction of a line to Volgograd (then: Tsaritsyn).
In the war against the Soviet Union in 1941–1945 , the area around Kalatsch, which was relatively close to the Stalingrad battlefield , was highly competitive. During the German advance between July 25 and August 11, 1942 Kalatsch was completely destroyed in the Kesselschlacht near Kalatsch . On November 22, 1942, the Red Army succeeded in uniting the front southeast of Kalatsch and thus encircling the German 6th Army near Stalingrad. To commemorate this crucial union of the fronts , the Monument Union of Fronts was erected in Kalach , designed by the renowned sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich .
1951 received Kalach municipal rights and has since been on-Don Kalach called to confusion with the eponymous town of Kalach in the Voronezh Oblast ruled out.
