Kotowo ( Russian Котово ) is a city with 24,115 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Russia and the administrative center of the raion of the same name in Volgograd Oblast . The place is located on the (Little) Kazanka River in the Don river system , 229 kilometers north of the regional capital Volgograd .
history
The place emerged in the 1710s with the establishment of a village on the Kasanka. The place name comes from the family name of the first settler there, a Ukrainian named Kotenko. In 1791 a stone church building was erected for the first time in Kotowo, namely the Archangel Michael Church, which is still standing today. Towards the end of the 19th century, the place already had almost 3,000 souls, most of whom were farmers. In 1912–1913 a water pipe was laid in Kotowo, which still functions as such today.
In the middle of the 20th century, oil fields in the area were developed near the city , which caused the population of Kotowos to increase. Kotowo has had city status since 1966.

economy
The main industry of the city is still the extraction and processing of crude oil, there is also a brick factory, a reinforced concrete factory and some smaller industrial companies in Kotowo. Agriculture is also practiced in the surrounding area.
Attractions
The oldest preserved building in Kotowo is the Archangel Michael Church (1791), and a few historical buildings from the 19th century have been preserved, including the former district administration house (1864).
