Srednjaja Akhtuba ( Russian Сре́дняя А́хтуба ) is an urban-type settlement in the Volgograd Oblast ( Russia ) with 14,431 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located 25 km as the crow flies east of the Volgograd Oblast Administrative Center and about 10 km southeast of the center of the city of Volschski on the left bank of the Akhtuba , the more than 500 km long left estuary of the Volga .
Srednjaja Akhtuba is the administrative center of Sredneachtubinski Rajon . The settlement is the only locality in the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije).
history
According to local tradition, the settlement is said to have been founded in 1668 by wounded people who had been left there by the Cossack ataman Stenka Razin , who had previously moved to Tsaritsyn . However, the place only received official status in 1758 by the artillery officer and later commander of Tsaritsyn Ivan Zypljatew; At this point in time, 3,000 people are said to have lived there. The place name refers to the river and means Middle Ahtuba.
In 1928 Srednjaja Akhtuba became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajon, and in 1959 it received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Economy and Infrastructure
There are food and construction industries in the settlement.
The regional road runs through the village, which leads from Volgograd via Wolschki down the Akhtuba to Astrakhan . In Srednjaja Akhtuba, a side street that crosses the Akhtuba branches off to the small town of Krasnoslobodsk on the left bank of the Volga opposite Volgograd. The nearest train station is in Volzhsky on the Volgograd - Astrakhan line.
