List of cities in Russia

Krasnoslobodsk ( Russian Краснослобо́дск ) is a city in the Volgograd Oblast in Russia . It has 15,998 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located a few kilometers east of the metropolis of Volgograd on the opposite left bank of the Volga . Another neighboring city is Wolschski , which is 17 kilometers northeast of Krasnoslobodsk.

history

Krasnoslobodsk emerged from a small Cossack village that had been known since around 1850 and was originally named Bukatin ( Букатин ) after a first settler . The city of today only began to develop after the first workshops for repairing Volga ships were built here in the 1890s.

After the October Revolution , the village was declared a so-called workers 'settlement and in 1933 it was renamed Krasnoslobodsk (from Krasnaya Sloboda , literally "red (suburban) settlement", where red was the color of the communist workers' movement). At first it belonged administratively to Volgograd (then Stalingrad). In 1935 it was declared an independent Rajon Center until it received the status of a district town in Srednjaja Akhtuba Rajon (Middle Akhtuba ) in 1955 .

During the Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943) Krasnoslobodsk was away from the fighting, which is why hospitals for injured Red Army soldiers were set up here.
