history

The place was founded in 1747 as Dmitrijew and was originally inhabited by settlers from Kamyshin (then: Dmitrijewsk) who operated salt production on a nearby lake . Towards the end of the 18th century, a church consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra was built in the place and in 1794 Dmitrijew was renamed Nikolajewskaja Sloboda ("Nicholas' settlement ") on the occasion of this .

The industrial salt production in the village lasted until the end of the 19th century and was one of the most important occupations of the local population until it was discontinued. After the funding was discontinued, the lake was used for therapeutic mud baths .

In 1952, with the construction of the Stalingrad hydroelectric power station, the damming of the Volga in the Nikolayevsk area began. For this reason, the settlement was moved nine kilometers downstream in the 1950s. The old place with historical buildings was completely flooded by 1960.

On June 29, 1967, Nikolayevsk received city rights under its current name.
