Surovikino ( Russian Суровикино ) is a city with 20,533 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Volgograd Oblast in southern Russia .
location
The city is located 155 km west of the regional capital Volgograd , on the right Don tributary Tschir near its confluence with the Zimlyansk reservoir of the Don. The closest town is Kalatsch on Don ; this is about 50 km east of Surowikino.
history
According to tradition, the place was founded in 1744 and was named after its first settlers, the old Orthodox Cossack Stepan Surowikin and his son Foma. A small Cossack village did not become a larger settlement until 1900, when a train station was opened there on a newly laid route from Volgograd. In 1966 Surovikino became a city and at the same time the center of the newly formed raion of the same name within the Volgograd Oblast.

Economy and Transport
In and around Surowikino agriculture is predominant; the industry is represented in the city only with food factories, an asphalt and a reinforced concrete plant.
The M21 trunk road from Volgograd to the Ukraine and the railway line from Volgograd to Rostov-on-Don run through Surovikino .
