The Zimljansker reservoir ( Russian Цимля́нское водохрани́лище / Zimljanskoje wodochranilishche ) which is located between Volgodonsk and Kalach am Don on the lower reaches of the Russian Don , covers an area of 2,700 km² and comprises a maximum of 23.9 km³ of storage volume. Its length is 302 km, its maximum width 38 km. The dam , which was built between 1949 and 1955, is located north of the city of Volgodonsk. A large hydroelectric power plant with an output of 160  MW was built here.

The barrier structure is a combination of a dam and a gravity dam . Their total length is more than 13 km, making it one of the longest dams on earth. The building height is given in various sources as 26 or 41 m.

In the course of the damming of the Zimljansk reservoir , many residents had to be relocated. Most of them moved into apartments in new settlements built by the Soviet state according to plan on the bank of the dammed lake and in Volgodonsk. The Sarkel archaeological site sank in the reservoir.

In the Tsimlyansk Reservoir, the over the Volga-Don channel with the Volga is connected, inter alia, opens the flow Chir .

The Rostov nuclear power plant , which is cooled with water from the lake, is also located on the Zimljansk reservoir .

By far the largest city on the reservoir is Volgodonsk .
