Sarkel (fortress)

Sarkel was a Khazarian - Scythian fortress built with Byzantine support around 830 on the Kamyshinka-Ilowlja-Portage , the ruins of which sank in the Zimlyansk reservoir in 1955 .

In the 1930s, the site was excavated by the Soviet archaeologist Mikhail Illarionowitsch Artamonov .
