Werner Forman

Werner Forman (* 1921 in Prague ; † February 13, 2010 in London ) was a Czech photographer who specialized primarily in the photography of works of art.

Life

In 1936 he got a job with the Czechoslovak airline because they found his pictures of airplanes appealing. During World War II he photographed war crimes. He was captured by the National Socialists. However, he was able to escape, was later caught again and used for forced labor in Munich , where he almost died. Since his mother was Jewish, he was sent to a concentration camp at the end of the war.

After the war he specialized in oriental art. His first book was dedicated to Chinese art, after which he was invited to China for six months . After 1968 he lived mainly in London .

As a photographer, he has published more than 80 books, mainly on ancient and non-European cultures. The texts are usually not from him.
