Kamyshinka-Ilowlja-Portage
The Kamyshinka-Ilowlja-Portage was a barrow path that connected Sarepta near Volgograd on the Volga with Ilowlja and thus Sarkel on the Don .
Diodorus mentioned and Ibn Fadlān traveled this tow path ( Diolkos ).
The Sarkel fortress was built around 830 .
In 1568, Selim II had earthworks carried out for a breakthrough between the Don tributary Ilowlja and the Volga tributary Kamyschinka (near Kamyshin on the 50th parallel) in order to deliver supplies for a storming of Astrakhan .
Johann Christoph von Urbich had a plan for a canal between Don and Ilovlya. In 1894 the watershed was overcome by a railway .
The Volga-Don Canal was dug from 1949 to July 27, 1952.
