Johann Christoph von Urbich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christoph Freiherr von Urbich (born April 25, 1653 in Creuzburg ; † October 17, 1715 ibid) was Privy Councilor, Ambassador and Minister in Vienna and a close confidante of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz .

The life of Urbich has remained largely unexplored. He was in close contact with the Minister Bernhard von Zech and had a decisive influence on European politics in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Fortunately, his written estate has been preserved. Among them are numerous letters from Leibniz.

He was the son of Johann Christoph Urbich (1615–1693), a pastor in Creuzburg / Werra, and Sybilla Margarethe Urbich, née Breithaupt (1633–1685).

From 1691 von Urbich was the ambassador of the Danish king in Vienna. 1703–1707 he was in the service of the Russian Tsar Peter the Great . As a direct consequence, he finally lived again in Vienna as the imperial Russian ambassador until 1712.

Because of his services to Russia and the Tsar, he was raised to the nobility there as a baron in 1707.

Urbich's younger brother Johann Caspar (1669–1728) also held the title of baron.
