traffic

The city can be easily reached by highways and by ship (in summer), which also benefits the transport of the manufactured industrial goods (but poorly by plane, bus and train). Due to its location on the Don River and the Volga-Don Canal, there are shipping connections to many cities in Russia, to the west over the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and to the east to the Caspian Sea .

On March 30, 2001, about 12 kilometers to the northeast on the banks of the reservoir, the currently youngest Russian nuclear power plant in Rostov went online, construction of which had already started in 1981.

The Russian-Austrian company FAM was built in 1994 and produces steel structures. It is the first company in the region to produce in accordance with the European ISO 9000 standard. The city also maintains good relations with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany . Around Volgodonsk there are around 1500 other companies that are active in the energy, mechanical engineering and food industries as well as wood processing. Artisanal production, on the other hand, seems to be less important.

Early 1980 was the work of nuclear Masch (short for nuclear equipment taken) in operation, the first industrial plant in the Soviet Union, the production of large reactor pressure vessels for pressurized water reactors of the construction line VVER made possible. Today the operating company Atomenergomasch is the largest producer of Russian pressurized water reactors and petrochemical plants alongside the Ischora works in Saint Petersburg .
