Tsimlyansk ( Russian Цимлянск ) is a city in Rostov Oblast ( Russia ) with 15,028 inhabitants (14 October 2010).
geography
The city is located about 240 km northeast of the oblast capital Rostov-on-Don on the right bank of the Don , at the northern end of the dam of the Zimlyansk reservoir named after the city .
Zimlyansk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
The city is located on the Morozovsk - Volgodonsk - Kuberle railway line, which was opened in 1951, but the northern part of Morozovsk - Volgodonsk with the 13-kilometer section on the top of the dam has been out of service since the 1990s, so the nearest train station is in the city of Volgodonsk south end of the dam is located.
history
In 1672, the small town of Ust-Zimla was founded by the Cossacks at the mouth of the Zimla river in the Don , subsequently called Stanitsa Zimlyanskaya .
With the start of construction of the Zimljansk dam in 1948, the flooding of the Stanitsa (4429 inhabitants in 1939) became apparent. Therefore, the place was rebuilt from 1950 on the future north bank of the reservoir and in 1952 received the status of an urban-type settlement as Zimlyansk . In 1961 the settlement was granted city rights.

In Zimlyansk there are companies in the food industry (wine, beer, dairy products), a carpet factory, a ship repair yard and building materials industry.
