Proletarsk ( Russian Пролетарск ) is a city in Rostov Oblast ( Russia ) with 20,267 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the northern Caucasus foothills about 200 km southeast of the oblast capital Rostov-on-Don on the right bank of the Cheprak not far from its confluence with the Manych , which is dammed up here to form the Proletarsk dam .

Proletarsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The city is located on the Volgograd - Tikhorezk railway line, opened in 1899 . The city's station is called Proletarskaya .

history

The place was founded in 1670 as a Cossack settlement , later Staniza Kara-Tschaplak . 1806 was the administrative center of Kalmückenkreises , 1844 the Salsker circle of Donkosakengebietes . At the beginning of the 1870s the Stanitsa was visited by the Grand Duke and later General Field Marshal Nikolai Romanov and was in his honor in 1875 in Velikoknjascheskaja (from Russian veliki knjas for Grand Duke ).

In 1925 it was renamed Proletarskaja (from proletarians ). In 1970 city rights were granted under the current name.
